Either is okay, but I think through agent is better. I apply through agent this year and the person-in-charge helps me fill in all the personal details, courses, etc. All I need to do is write the personal statement and give five course codes.
If you apply it yourself (that means you require school's assistance), you won't be able to have a glimpse of what the predicted grades are or how are you described in the recommendation letter because normally school will seal it. But if you have agent, you can take the letter to the agent and open it, since UCAS does not require original copy. Another thing is that school won't be able to give much suggestions (fearing that you will later 'kill' them if your application is unsuccessful) or what the situation is in different cities of UK, agents know better in this area.
