My girl has an excellent command of English in terms of listening and speaking. I do a lot of story-telling with her too in English. The issue here is that her school does not teach phonics so she is now taking phonics lessons outside at very elementary level. I know some parents run along the words with their fingers to help with word recognition while they read to their children but this is not something I enjoy doing.

To put it simply, I don't think my girl will be ready to read aloud English sentences, let alone a book, on her own by the time those admission interviews begin. So I just wonder if there are any good DSS/ private schools where my daughter still stands a chance.

Many thanks.

How old is your kid?

My experience is even I didn't point the word during reading, the kid can still recognise words eventually (we started reading since few month old and my kid's English boosted up at 4) No worry and keep the good work, it will well pay off.

My child's experience is that all the DSS/Private schools we interviewed require recognizing words in both English and Chinese either by doing worksheets or read out words. Quite a few schools require reading books ( i.e. Sentence / short paragraph reading). Only one school we interviewed tested English verbal+listening (retell stories) that is DGJS, which also requires word recognition.

My child wasn't able to read a year ago but with a lot of reading together time she can read quite confidently now. So nothing is impossible.

Thank you for your reply! So children's reading ability can improve by leaps and bounds within a single year from K2 to K3? Without the school's collaboration, is it still achievable? I really don't want to be too much of a 'teacher' to my children!

Yes, a child's reading skills can improve very fast. More than leap and bounds. I think you are on the right track already since you have been reading to her for a while. As she can listen well, she should have stored a lot of vocabulary/sentences in her brain. When the moment comes and she starts reading, she will be able to recall those vocabulary/sentences and connect them in the books, being able to not only read the words but also understand the words and sentences in the context of the passage, and her reading skills/reading comprehension will improve exponentially. The above is from Jim Trelease's famous read aloud handbook.
http://www.trelease-on-reading.com/rah-ch1-pg2.html

For my case, I started reading aloud to my son at around end of k2 and he has improved a lot in 5 months ( he is k3 now). So I think can improve very fast as my son is not particularly clever haha

U may not point word by word in the story book, just start with simple words. Also u can play more word games, eg let's say some words begin with an "A" to teach her sounds. I will write those words on the white board to strengthen my son's spelling. He could read by himself of an unseen book before three years old, but reading at young age really depends on kids' capability. My younger son who is now two is much slower in reading words, but his comprehension to a story is v good. He could grab the key ideas of a story quickly.

You may also teach your daughter Phonics since 3 yr old.  As the kid is good at English conversation, she does have a word bank in mind.  Once she learnt phonics and able to blend, she will recognise many words with no effort.  It also facilitates her to read.

You are welcome! Also, according to Trelease and other read aloud articles, a child's listening skills is usually 2 years ahead of their reading skills. So if a child can read a k2 book alone, the parent should be reading aloud to them a p1 book. The child is ready (in terms of listening skills and 心智發展)to enjoy a more complicated story than their reading skills could let them. According to the articles, children learn the most by listening and there are many benefits from story read aloud(such as language improvement, 心智發展, parent child bonding, etc). For more detailed explanation, you can read the trealease handbook or google read aloud.

I agree - they will automatically ask when they are ready. My 2.5 year old boy is showing this eagerness and started to read us simple books.

I think it's how you execute it too - you don't have to be a "teacher" but a playmate and reading buddy?
