My daughter got 2 offers. One is from her brother's school (a private primary school in Wanchai) and a DSS school in TKO. However, we went to knock a Catholic subsidized girl's school in Wanchai in late June. She was admitted a day later. My girl hasn't joined any tutorial classes, interview classes or so. She just follows what St Cat teachers taught her.

After the interview, I had two strong feeling. One is, the money I spent on her ECA (ballet dance, singing and art) are worth. The other one is, I have to thank the teachers of St. Cat who have trained my girl to be a brave and confident person. She's not afraid of speaking in front of strangers. Of course, this is very important in interviews. Agree? Therefore, I wrote a letter of gratitude to their teachers to appreciate their hard work.On the day of interview, two female teachers asked my girl to perform differently. One asked her to dance while the other one asked her to tell a story. When the teacher looked at her report cards and knew that my girl learned Putonghua at St. cat and immediately she asked my girl to tell the story in PTH. Honestly, I was so amazed by her performance. She spoke fluently without much hesitation. Then my girl replied all questions in PTH. Both my husband and I were born in HK and we know little PTH. I'm pretty sure the training she received in St Cat helps her much.
Two weeks later, my girl and the other new P.1 girls attended the screening test (Chinese, English & Maths). The Principal said if anyone performed less satisfactorily, they had to meet the teachers in the following week to discuss how to help and equip them for the P.1 curriculum. That really scared us. A few days, we received the result by mail. My girl obtained Excellence in English and Maths and Good in Chinese. She was allocated to the Elite class. I think I have answered your questions.
Good luck!

As long as I remembered, most school would ask parents what language is preferred for interview. My girl's primary school is a CMI school, however, English should be harder than other counterparts as their sister secondary school is an EMI one. Before my girl was asked to speak in PTH, the interview was conducted in Cantonese. :dadday:

My girl has a busy ECA timetable. 2 days for ballet, 1 day for Yip's Children Choir and 1 day for Arts. Hence, she has no more spare time for any classes. Both of my kids have never joined (so far but I don't know if they need in the future) any academic tutorial classes.

I'm sorry. I don't know how to answer your question. As you're your boy's mom, you should be much understanding him than any others. To me and my hubby, we think that being polite and confident is far more important than good academic performance. What's more, building up a good reading habit is as crucial as being well-behaved. Many schools will ask kids to read books or ask them if they have reading habits during the interview. If you have read through my previous replies, my girl was asked if she read regularly. Not only once, she was asked this question for quite a number of times. Indeed it's not necessary to read difficult English readers. Instead it might be better to train our kids to retell the story themselves. My girl was asked to tell Three Little Pigs in PTH during her primary school interview. If the kid is not familiar with the story, they shouldn't  be able to perform it well.
I have 2 kids (1 boy and 1 girl). None of them have ever joined any academic classes. I found that no interviews would test kids in written forms unless those are held in late June (door-knocking ones).
Think about the strengths of your kids and foster it to be the best.
Good luck! God bless.
