1) Play lots of board games for a strong foundation of logical thinking.
2) Use proper methods to make the child understand the relationship between numbers. For example, 7+8 , the child needs to understand 8 is the conbination of 3 and 5. So the child should answer, 7 + 3 to make it 10, then add 5 to make it 15. The way of thinking is more important than how fast and accurate the answer is.
I don't allow my child to count with fingers nor count one by one in mind.
In my opinion, it's a waste of time to do any drilling exercise, and there is no point joining any Maths competition. at the kindergarten stage, the more the child do Maths exercise, the less he thinks.
Believe or not, my son has no proper Math homework at K, (only logical games), in the first term of primary 1, he came first in Maths. (his primary school is half year ahead)
My strategy: IQ board games at K, different kinds of chess in lower primary, start Olympic Maths in upper primary. Actually I am very poor in Math, luckily, he doesn't my help till now.
