My son got accept by both St Peter's and LGS. We personally visited both schools and talked to the headmasters in 2011.
We have the following impressions :
LGS : Strong in academic training (curriculum delivery is tailored made for boys), students got outstanding results in public exams in general, and quite large amount goes to Ox-bridge every year (it was like 15% in 2010). The activities they offer are more boys oriented (like robot car, monster world). The boys we have seen there are polite, confident. The school is strong in nurturing leadership among boys. A boys' school indeed but with a sisters' girls school at next door, so many activities (eg. orchestra) and some subjects in high forms are co-ed. About 30 students in a class in junior forms and around 20 or less from year 10
St Peters:
Good achievements in public exam too, the environment is more relax that located in the beautiful city of York. The proportion of overseas students is low and I can say it's a typical school for English middle class children. My son entered year 7 so I am quite sure if he went to St Peter's, he will definitely become a 鬼仔 few years later. There are around 10+ in a class from year 10 (if I remember correctly). Very warmth and good caring in the boarding house.
We were struggling at that time, we finally chose LGS because of its cheaper school fees, slightly higher % in A levels A/B results and the school tends to train kids to be more independent. The Loughborough city (a boring city indeed) and is a mix of east and west so the school's population is fill up with different origins (majority British with South and East Asian and African). The ration of Chinese boarders is high too. One might think that this affecs the chance of learning English, but in fact the housemaster manage it well and even between Chinese they speak in English. My thought is this mix would make bullying and discrimination become minimal, and in fact the senior Chines boys would naturally take care the younger ones.
The boarding house was also our concern too, as in LGS junior house it is 9 boarders in a room, though the room is very large (from year 10 or 11 it is like 4 in a room). In St Peter's, it is 4 or even less in a room, and the matron in St Peter's is wonderful. Nevertheless, just before we made the final decision, LGS announced that they are going to extend the boarding house by building a new blocks so borders will have a better environment from 2013. This news let us determine the choice to be LGS.
Kimbolton is one of our shortlisted school too but not in the "top 4" of our preference, so we did not visit and not know much about it.
In my opinion, if your son is independent enough and looking for challenge in academic and extra curriculum, you go for LGS. If you want more caring and happy and relax school lives, go for St Peter's. Of course, the school fees is another issue that you might need to consider.
Hope it helps!
