Any GT School Parents?

My girl will study in P1 in Sept. this year.  I would like the parents of GT school students to give me the information on:
(1) The language standard of this school, in respect of both English and Putonghau.  The school website states that 85% of the P.6 students have been admitted to English Secondary School in past 4 years.  Does it mean that it's English standard is high? (Please do not compare with DGS, DBS, Maryknoll, Goodhope, etc.)
(2)  How do the school put forward the teaching of language.  Any reading scheme, phonics, etc. in P.1?
What is the teaching media of each individual subjects?
(3)  The GT school - secondary section will use English as teaching media.  Do you worry that it will be switched to Chinese following the recent 中學教學語言及升中機制諮詢文件?
(4)  How is the workload of this school, i.e. dictation, test, assessment, projects, etc.  Do the parents need to help them to finish the homeworks?

Thanks

Re: Any GT School Parents?

My son study in P1 of GT school. It is hard to answer your questions but let me try my best.

1) I am not sure how to measure language standard in primary school level. I would say it is on average. A year ago, some GT school parents complaint their english standard was not up to speed. This year, GT school adjust their syllabus which is half year advance than last year. I would say the standard is fair. Regarding to 85% admitted to english secordary school, I understand GT school only had less than 50 P6 students last year. Most of students get the seat by owned application. Not sure how to comment.

2) The school does have some activities such as reading week, mandarin week or english week to encourage students on using language. Each week would have 3 lessons for native english speaking teachers. One for phonics, one for reading and the other for writing.  For mandarin, my son just start learning the basic skill. Only 2 mandarin classes each week in the first year I heard the school will start using mandarin in P2 for chinese subject. I am not sure whether my son is OK on using mandarin for Chinese subject next year. From my understanding, it is quite large number of native mandarin speaking teacher in the school. Each other individual subject are in cantonese.

3) If I am not wrong, 直資 school is not under 中學教學語言及升中機制諮詢文件. 直資 school can decide their teaching media. Number of applicants can be the measure point.

4) The school workload is fair. One hour should be enough daily for homework. One dictation a week. This week is for english dictation and next week will be for chinese dictation. Parent would need effort to review their homework but it should be easy.  We don't feel pressure yet. My son still have plenty of time for different activities.

Re: Any GT School Parents?

chunhei,

Thanks for your information.

But I am still a little bit worry because GT School have many Given-talent students.  I'm not sure whether my girl is or not, but I don't think she is.  Will this cause pressure to her if her classmates are all 'given-talent' because she may not be able to catch up with the classmates?  Any scheme to help the below-standard students?  Is your son a 'given-talent' child?  Has your son done the MI test already?  Does this test can really investigate which intellegence the individual kids possess?

Sorry for so many questions as there are very few GT parents participate in the BK forum.

Re: Any GT School Parents?

Hi qwong,

In fact, my son is Chun Hei. Honest speaking, I don't think my son is one of gifted children but we didn't do any MI test for confirmation. In my son's class, I do not really find many gifted children may be I don't know how to determine gifted child.  I found the class is mixed with few very hyper active, some are very quiet but they do have common ground. Most parents have very high expectation(many activities) to their kids but they don't want to give them too much pressure.  Anyway, I hope that can help you to have better undertanding to the school.
