My daughter will be starting in an ESF school this Sep and I understand the kids have to bring in their own lunch - any lunch gear ideas? Do I need to get her a lunch bag to put everything in?

Mine is quite picky. If I leave him to eat by himself, he probably just want to eat plain macaroni or noodle. He can't eat like this for long term, can anyone share the tricks?

At home, we will watch him and make sure he picks his vege and meat, but not gonna happen at school...

Help!

For most ESF primary schools, students have to bring their own lunch to school (no lunch box suppliers).  Imagine those young Year 1 students have to carry / take care of their school bags, lunch bags, hats, jackets, etc. to school everyday and to handle everything all by themselves during lunch time, e.g. packing and upacking the lunch boxes, not to mention whether they could finish the lunch.  Sigh...so worry...mine is not even 5 when school starts in August.

I think they are already doing these things now? At my son's kindy, they have to take out their communication book and their snack boxes (these go to specific areas in the classroom) and put away their school bags as well as take/off hang up their jackets in winter.

But I also have been pondering over the lunchbox options. Sandwiches would be so easy but my son doesn't like them much.

I've been reading up about this online and got some great suggestions like doing chicken skewers, spinach-stuffed ravioli etc.  One trick is not to pack too many snack things that they like, so there's less choice and they will then have to eat the veg/meat as they are hungry.

No worries, my son brought snacks (very simple one like crackers) during his study in primary school.  His school bag wasn't heavy at all, he brought very few stuffs to school.

I happened to argue about healthy diet with my wife, we discussed with our kid and found most of the kids usually go to playground during the break, they spent very little time to eat.  So we just keep it as simple as possible.

Something that can be finished in 20 minutes. Sushi roll, hot dog, japanese dumpling, udon ... Pls try to let them eat by themselves from NOW on... if you do not wish to receive call from your kid's homeroom teacher "discussing" with you about his lunch ...

I think the teachers in ESF (unlike those in local schools) do not care much about how much the kids can eat for lunch.  My daughter is in year three in an ESF school now.  She was in another ESF school before.  The problem for my daughter all along is that she always eats very very slowly and it ended up she could only eat just very little for lunch everyday.

According to the class timetable, they have 45 mins for lunch but it turned out that they have at most 20 mins for lunch everyday (the remaining time is play time no matter they finished the food or not), which is a very short time for a slow eater as my daughter.  It has been a headache to me but i found no solution up till now.  I tried to discuss with the teachers in both schools to understand more but they both said the kids needed to play during lunch time as well, even though they could not finish the food for lunch.

What i can do now is to give her food after school and she looks hungry after school as she ate so little during break and lunch in school.

So what you can do now is to train your kids to eat quickly :) and needless to say, to eat by themsleves...

In my boy's esf primary school, we can make order for hot lunch .  Every month, kids would receive a hot lunch order form or download the order form on web (the coming month). You can choose which days you need to order hot lunch (min. 5 days). It is very flexible for us (in case we see the menu on that day is not attractive to your kids).

There are CHOICE A/B/C each day -- chinese, western and veg... Most are kids' favourite. For CHOICE A- Chinese style, most of them are different kinds of fried noodle or rice(有肉有菜). Western style is something likes pasta, corn on cob, pita bread or burger.

I guess just the same things:

pasta
fried rice, a bit of meat and vegetables
sushi roll
sandwich

snack - fruits, crackers

Get the child to eat at home by himself and practice unpacking and packing back the lunch box.  My son is a Dec 31 baby, so he was the youngest in the ENTIRE year!  Other than a bit of help to open his 保暖壺 because it's tight, he does everything by himself from the start.  He even washed his fork/chopsticks (I didn't ask him to and nobody else in class does) because he didn't want to make the pouch dirty.  Habit needs to be built up at home.  I have to admit though, he has always been quick with his meals.  Almost everyday, he comes home with his lunch box cleaned out.

My older one also eats slowly at home.  I found that she would sometimes finish her lunch and sometimes not, depending on how much she likes it.  I don't think there is anything to worry about.  If she is hungry, she comes home and finishes her lunch.  I just make a point that no food is to be wasted.  What she didn't finish the prior meal goes for her next meal.  Otherwise, they get picky with their lunch.  Of course, I try to avoid things that they don't like.
