Re: PLK CKY - can anyone tell me about it

Dear Johnny,

Remember that decision is always yours!
However, I can share with you some of my kid's
experience of studying in CKY.

1. Immerse in English and PTH speaking environment

Teachers are expected to communicate with children with either English or PTH while at school or during outings.  If the teacher is teaching PTH, he/she must speak PTH all the time.  My kid was very confidence in asking in English the French speaking librarian why the computer did not work last week.

2. Enjoy Good reading environment

Students are expected to read a lot of theme books like Solar system and space in the English lesson in the first half year of P.3 and "dinosaur" in the later part of the year.  Moreover, they have to join the book reading scheme in both Chinese and English.  There is reading session every day and reading corner with lots of new and interesting books for kids to read in each classroom in addition to the main library.  With long holidays, kids are expected to read a lots of reading by themselves.  My kid told me that he enjoyed reading very much and was eager to read every new book in the reading corner.

3. Encourage group discussion and personal opinion

During parent observation day, one can see how students actively participate in answering teacher's questions and in discussing among themselves.  This might be misinterpreted as lack of order in class.  Of course, you might find it difficult to answer your kid when he 'reasons' with you on the proper way you are doing thing sometime.

4. Insist to be oneself & do own work

Sometime when my child was very busy in doing his project till late at night, I would like to give hime some help or even to write some passages for him.  However, he would refuse me by saying that the teacher told him that he should do his project himself and he would use his own words for his project and not mine.

5. Learn at class and outdoor

During the Chinese class when there was a theme study on animals, apart from reading books and surfing the internet on animals, the class had gone an outing to a safari park in Guangzhou.  Students were required to report in details their observations in descriptive terms and passages on various animals in the outing handbook, to write diary on their experience and feeling about animals watching and to do some project work.

6. Enjoy more leisure time and parental time at home

7. Participate in various extracurricular activities

8. Learn at least one musical instrument

9. Enjoy talking with teachers

10. Love going to school

11. Learn science by interesting experiment

12. Practise a lot in enhancing communication skills

and lots more.

Hoping that this will help you to decide if CKY really suits you and most importantly, your kid.

Will

Re: PLK CKY - can anyone tell me about it

I really love this school but someone told me that some teacher quit their jobs this year and the turnover of the teacher is quite high. Is it true? I just think if the teacher change too much , it is not good to the children and it must have something wrong to the school management. Am I right?

Re: PLK CKY - can anyone tell me about it

Dear PLKCKYKID,

Thanks for your sharing about the school.  I have registered this Tuesday and am still struggling about CKY and a subsidized school.  Frankly, I do like the school but I'm a bit worried about the school fee and the renovation project.  I've heard that they will tear down the current Yiu Chung campus.  Has the plan been shared in any parents' meeting?  What is the school fee + misc. fee on an annual basis?  Do you feel any need to enrol your kid in any other courses?

Re: PLK CKY - can anyone tell me about it

Dear Harold,

You're right.  There isn't any examination nor any test.  Also, there is no dictation and there is no quiz.  There are assessments and one for each term.  However, you cannot prepare for them as there will be no syllabus for students to refer to.

What is the difference between an examination and an assessment?  For me, an examination is a devise to measure your comparative edge over or below the boys/girls next to you.  The assessment in CKY is but a continuous process in identifying your strength and weakness through your homework, your at class performance and the performance during the half yearly assessment.  You will not know your position in your class or your markings in your student reports.  There will only be an indicator of your performance in, for instance, how well your communication skills, your writing skills  etc.  There will be comments made by the subject teacher on your individual aspects of performance for that particualr subject.  In a way, you are comparing with your own.

This kind of assessment works for those who believe its worthiness.  In the olden days, we believed that a distinction in either English or Chinese was precious.  Nowadays, such belief had long gone.  That is why besides the school cert. and the degree, both our government and the employers think of another way of testing the English standard of our kids.

In CKY, as parents you know the best of how well is your kid.  This is because CKY treasures so much on the interaction between the kids and their parents, the parents and the school.  If you work in the school way, you have to listen to your kid's reading and write down in the worksheet of your comment on your kid's performance.  Day by day, month by month, there will be no surprise to you about your kid's performance as observed by the teachers.

Put it another way.  If you are a general, what care you most is how to win the war and not a battle.  In a global village as in nowadays, jobs will go to the most competitive place or be more precise, the most competitive person.  Either you are too smart or your service is so cheap.  In any way, it doesn't matter whether or not you win the boys/girls sitting next to you.  Also, it will be too much a price to pay if you do not know how to interact and cooperate with others.  Then you are putting yourself in a very disadvantageous position.

In CKY, there are ample opportunities for kids to discuss among themselves in circle and to share views of others.  Also, they have to do group projects as well as individual ones.  At times, they have to present their own project in front of the class or even before a group of guest teachers from other schools.  What I have observed from my kid is that he is not afraid and is very willing to express his own ideas in front of others, even strangers and in English.  That is unthinkable at my time even when I was studying for my undergraduate program.

I think the assessment instead of the test or the examination works for my kid.

Re: PLK CKY - can anyone tell me about it

Dear Sammymother,

I must say I do not know everything about the school.  I know that some of the parents are very kind and they are willing to offer their precious time in going to school day after day to help as parent helpers.  They must know much more about the school.  You might go and find out more about the school by talking with these parents especially on Saturday when a lot of kids with parents accompanying will take some extracurricular activities at their own cost of course.

Regarding the school renovation, it will be a good idea if you go to talk with Principal Yeung who is in-charge of the project and is willing to explain to you in details.  In fact, all teachers in the school are very helpful; they are willing to listen to parents and will share their views with them.

The school fee is $3,800 per month for 11 months a year.  There will be book fee at about $1,000 for the first term and about $700 for the second term.  Several hundreds for worksheets, exercise books, folders, art sheets and materials, etc.  Less than a hundred for transport fee for regular outings.  Trip outside Hong Kong is optional.  If you want your kid to learn a musical instrument from some good part-time outside teachers who will go to school to teach, you have to pay for about $2,000 for tuition fee for one term.  You might have to pay for most musical instruments except hand-bells that will be provided by the school.  $16 a lunchbox a day and there will be no tack shop and kids have to bring their own snacks.  Several hundred for school bus fee per month.  These are most of the expenses for a year that I can think of.

Though CKY does help my kid a lot, there are still something that my kid would like to learn or that I think will serve him better outside such as he learns Japanese on Saturday but then he cannot join the French course as he wants to take other activities at school that morning so he has to take the French course in Alliance Francaise de Hong Kong.  Also, my child loves music so much that he sings in a well organised choir, learns violin and cello outside besides learning a wood wind instrument at school. There are some others as well.  Last but not least, my kid likes to learn cooking and I am still considering how to juggle some time for him to learn how to bake cakes
.

dear PLKCKYkid

Thanks for your information.

If there are no quiz and examination in PLKCKY. It would be good for the full-time working mommy. Right? Or it still need the mommy involved a lot on the kid's homework, project... May I know your thought? Thank you.

Re: PLK CKY - can anyone tell me about it

Thanks a lot PLKCKYKID.  I really appreciate your patience and kindness in sharing what you know about the school.  I believe that shows the quality of the parents of the school which is very important.  My kid and I were interviewed by Mr. Yeung during the second meeting and he did impress me as a very understanding gentleman.  PLKCKYKID, maybe we'll cross sometime in school.

Re: PLK CKY - can anyone tell me about it

Dear WYmon,

In P.3, apart from Chinese, computer and some of the art lessons, all other subjects like maths, science, P.E., music and moral education (which account for 70%) are taught by native English teachers.

However, in P.1 to P.2, all subjects except Chinese are taught by native English teachers.  As explained by the school principal, these students have to expose more to an English speaking environment so as to improve their English communication skills.  From P.3 onwards, she has the confidence that kids can communicate in English at ease.

To this, I do agree.  In fact, recently, I misinserted into recorder a tape of Part 2 of Flyers stage of the Cambridge mock examination papers prepared by Cambridge ESOL so as to find out the listening skills of my kid.  I thought it was a tape of Movers stage, the second stage of the exam.  To my surprise, he could have no problem in handling most of the exam at Flyers stage.

Re: PLK CKY - can anyone tell me about it

plkckykid,

Thanks very much for your detail info.  I also know a few kids of my daughter studying in CKY, they can speak English fluently, but I am not sure if this is common in the school.  It is good that you have high confidence in the school.  I know that it is not easy to get in.  Heard that CKY will have its secondary school in 2006 (?), I will consider applying for my girl.

Thanks.

Re: PLK CKY - can anyone tell me about it

Hi plkckykid,

Thanks for info.

May I know why did they charge 11 month per year instead of 10 compared with other private/DSS school?
The school fee is $3,800 per month for 11 months a year.

Diamond,

今年我個仔係用中英文INTERVIEW小朋友,遊戲形式。而2nd interview就只用中文,主要係傾計,講吓對小朋友嘅教育看法。

Dear plkckykid,

CKY sounds an ideal school for me. If you were to choose between DGS and CKY, which one will you choose?

Re: PLK CKY - can anyone tell me about it

Diamond,
