SIS is our first choice, hoping to start from PY2.  I understand that SIS's emphasis is on English and Putonghua, so I am wondering whether I should let him attend PN and K which provide a learning environment in both languages.  Please feel free to discuss anything in relation to SIS.  Thanks in advance!

It's rather difficult to get a spot in PY2 without attending PY1, I would suggest you to join earlier (PY1). Since most PY1 kids will be promoted to PY2, there are no seats (or maybe there are a few, but please bear in mind that they have long waiting lists) left for outsiders.

It doesn't matter which kindergarten your child come from, if you're applying PY1/2, only one language will be assessed (either Eng/PTH), according to parent's preference. SIS is looking for fluent Eng/PTH speakers and are well-disciplined, with good communication skills, moreover, the school might test on the kids' mathematics concepts such as counting toys/candies or whatever similar.

But I heard some existing PY1/2 parents (some years ago when my kids had the interviews, they told me those teachers didn't test their Mandarin level, the whole interview was conducted in English. I think they have changed the policy few years ago, if you've picked English, then the interview will mostly be conducted in English but there may be some parts conducted in Mandarin too) said the school do test on both English and Mandarin during the interview, even though you chose English as your language preference.

During the interview, parents are not allowed to accompany with your child, so s/he must be independent enough to finish the whole process.

My kids have friends who came from Victoria, Swck, Rightmind etc.

Hihi, thanks for your detailed reply.  It was a typo error.  I meant PY1, not PY2.  Anyway I was told few years ago that S'poreans will not fail to get a spot in PY1 becoz SIS was partially funded by the S'pore government.  Any idea whether this is true?  Btw are you from S'pore?

It's true that Singaporeans have priority. So it's getting more competitive for the locals to get a spot.

What I heard was, S'poreans have confirmed spot, not just priority, coz SIS is funded by the S'pore government.  But this message came many years ago, but I am not sure whether it still works this way now.  Btw you are from S'pore?

Yes, and my boy is studying in PY1 this year. It seems like a lot of kids in the class are also Singaporeans. But I'm not sure about the other classes.

Terrible .  Re singapor'n , as I know some singaporean is not accepted even have sibling in higher class. Real case. Think school really care the performance of the kid. hope this help.

I presume you are saying "one" S'porean who failed to get a spot in SIS even with elder sibling studying in SIS, not "some"?  Do you know this applicant personally or u heard about it?  Any idea why he/she was rejected?

Minirat,We aren't from Singapore, my kids are local Hong Kongers holding Canadian Passport. I think it doesn't matter whether your child is holding a foreign passport or not, the key to get a spot successfully is to perform well during the interview.

Yes, you're right, Singaporeans do have priority over other applicants. They also enjoy a subsidy of school fee from their govt of HKD$16,XXX annually (I forgot the exact value, you may check from their website).

For siblings, even if they are rejected in the first interview, they might be offered a second chance if parents keep on writing letters etc.  Young kids are emotional and shy and IS's often like to place children of the same family together.  Rejection of siblings by IS's are rare, unless the kid really can't speak English or has other special needs that the school can't meet.

That may have been true at some schools and in previous years.  But from what I have heard, not uncommon for siblings to be rejected.  Heard of many cases at ISF.

Yes, I believe the case quoted by 112200 should be quite an exceptional case, coz this child not only possessed the advantage of having an elder sibling studying in SIS, is also a S'pore citizen at the same time, rightfully "double" priorities.

Yes, if the school has resources, they could admit children with mild level of special needs. I really appreciate ESF's non-selective policy. It's difficult to whether a kid will be bright at 4 or 5. IS's believe they can train up any kid. Local schools (or semi local like ISF) rely much on interview performance partly because they have to interview every kid who submits application and they have to make sure that the kid will benefit from traditional teaching (or spoon feed) methods. If admitting older students, it will make sense to test their academic ability so that they won't fall far behind in class.

I share the same sentiments, especially when a little age difference can make a big deal of difference in performances.  On the other hand, I guess the school needs a way to select candidates from the overwhelming applications, no choice.  Comparing to judgement from applicants' background or parents' calibre, or on first come first serve basis, I think interviewing the kids would seem more reasonable.  We can perhaps take it this way, maybe these professions have their way of selecting candidates?
