Let me share some past experience on WCA as reference.
My son got double distinctions in 2008, but he couldn't get the scholarship for secondary stream. Interestingly, most kids went to Imperial College to take the STEM Summer Program were without scholarship. If my memory is correct, 6 out of 60 with scholarships.
Among the STEM programs, my son took two, one was Maths and one was Technology Marketing.... Others were Forensic, Bio-Tech, Astrology ...... His selected programs inspired him and helped him to pick the targeted program for his first degree.
If the timing is not right or you can't afford it, you can still take the summer programs co-organised by JH and HKUST in the beautiful HKUST campus. Your kids can benefit from the gifted programs which HK regular schools can't provide.
My suggestions:
1. Take WCA if think appropriate -> double distinction -> for school admission (Not very useful.)
2. Double distinction -> with Scholarship join STEM in Imperial College
3. Double or single distinction -> Join local summer programs -> learn something new with kids internationally and some tutors are from USA
4. Join continuous support programs from HKUST to sharpen their talents in Maths, Physics, Writing.....
If we think about education and competition can be inspirational and more than just a certificate. Many possibilities...... |
