My kid is going to a summer program in the US.  She has to obtain student VISA.  I have already paid the SEVIS fee online (Student Exchange Visitor Information System USD200) and obtain the I-20 form from the school (USD250)  I have already made an appointment to go to the US Consulate.  Do I need to:

1. fill in any other kind of form?
2. pay another VISA application fee at Dah SIng Bank (HKD1,280)?
3. My kid is 12.  Does she need to go?

I have problem to read the very cumbersome US consulate information.   Please help!

All these VISA fees will total more than HKD6,000.- including medical check up and TB test.  I will definitely not arrange another US summer camp!

不只是錢的問題, 簡直是麻煩到嘔!   I did it last year, but I forgot it all.   I have to do it this year again, but I still haven't got the Form I-20 from the school.   If other parents are too busy to answer your questions, I shall try to dig out the old file tonight and let you know.

Do you mind sharing what summer camps your kids are going to? What's the nature? The duration? Cost?

bobbyceung, your kids went last year and you are sending him/her again this year? Do you find it helpful to your child so you are doing it again? Or is it a different camp?

My kid is going to Johns Hopkins CTY summer school for 3 weeks.  You may find a lot of info here:
http://cty.jhu.edu/summer/

They do offer courses in HK but I think it will be better for my kid to see a bit of US life.

Chole,

Sorry, by looking at the copies of documents I have in my file, I can't really piece together what I did.  It's a mess.  Anyway, I have had a look at the website.  http://hongkong.usconsulate.gov/niv.html
Here are the answers:-
1. Since you have already made an appointment, I guess you did fill in the lengthy form online.
2. Yes, you are required to pay the application fee in advance at Dah Sing Bank in Hong Kong.
3. "....Children under age 14 who are resident in Hong Kong or Macau and have not been refused a visa do not need to appear in person, however, children must be physically present in Hong Kong or Macau. Only the parent or legal guardian can apply on the child's behalf. Please bring proof of relationship or legal guardianship such as an original birth certificate or court document."

Do remember to bring along all the required documents.

I am afraid you can't call them because they don't answer questions by telephone.  I did ask them questions by email and they did respond within 3 business days.

Sorry to have troubled you.  There's no need to fill in a form before making appointments so I am not sure.....

I have just sent an email to the Consulate.  Cross my fingers that I could get their response before the appointment date.

I also heard that many kids enjoy CTY a lot, be it in US or in HK.

No trouble because I am 自願的.  No need to fill in a form online?  I am talking about DS-160.  See Step 4 of http://hongkong.usconsulate.gov/niv_apply.html   I thought you need to complete this form before you make an appointment.

I checked the confirmation printout again.  I did make an appointment without filling in the form.  Somehow I think I should have done something wrong.  Why the US needs to torture us?  Different forms, different fees paid by different methods.......Can they improve their logistics?

My kid also went to CTY last year.  I rather not to tell you about the camp this year as the school's arrangement is so messy that I would not recommend it to other people.

Go here and you will find a lot of information on summer programs in US.

Hi bobbycheung, I would like to hear about both the good ones and the bad ones so that I know which one to avoid. Can you tell me about this year's camp if you don't mind? How old is your kid by the way?

mugtaitai,

Please check pm.

I have done some research on US summer programs.  Here is what I learned.  (1) Make sure that the program you choose accept overseas students. There are some that don't.  (2) The programs all look great on paper.  It's therefore important that you go through, for example, the comments in College Confidential etc. even though the reviewers may not be totally reliable or unbiased.    (3) The best or prestigious programs are always those that provide scholarship (ie. free of charge).  They are very competitive and difficult to get in.  (4) Programs like CTY are great experience for your kids, but I don't think it will do much to boost your kid's CV.

Bobby

bobbycheung, thank you very much for your sharing. Valuable insight indeed.

If I want to pick a program that boost my son's cv, should I be targeting those prestigious programs? In what ways are they hard to get in? Do they require high test scores? good school grades? what are the things that they look for when they choose students?

mugtaitai,

I am no expert.  lol   In fact, I barely know more than you do.  Take a look at this thread.  I think it may answer some of  your questions.  (To be honest, I didn't read through it all myself as 52 pages are just far too many for me)
