BAFS vs ECON, what's your guys comments?

我當年幫個仔揀咗ECON,當年我搵咗ECON同BAFS(之前有科係叫企業概論/商業概論之類---sorry,太耐唔記得)以前公開考試(CE/AL/ASL?

For picking economics in a university, well versed in mathematics is indispensable.  As you proceed to higher and higher level, you will find that the use of mathematics and statistics, sometimes, may suffocate an art student who is weak in mathematics and statistics.

In my viewpoints, economics lays emphasis on theories and although interesting; making good use of them take a lot of time because you need to digest the implications of those theories and to blend them with real life experience.

However, in secondary education level, I don't think the syllabus entails much mathematics.  Personal interest, in this stage, may be the most crucial factor to be considered.  If your kid shows his/her own preference in the subject, why not let he/she make his/her own decision?  If one has interest in a subject, he will work hard for it.

I would like to know that whether it is common to select 3 electives ( physic, Chem and Econ and M1 in S4 or option 2: Physic, Chem and Bio and M2.   Which one is better and got higher chance to attain good grades? My son is good at Math, Science and IH and he is interetsed in Econ as compared with Bio,   in that case, Will Econ a better choice than Bio,  .  Also, is it common in the  other secondary schools, takes three electives +M1 or M2... will the workload too high?thank you in advance for your kind advice.

Both options are very common for students who are good at science subjects and Maths.  For choices between M1 (calculus & statistics) or M2 (calculus & Algebra), it depends on your son's interest and learning capacity in the specific areas.  My son's Maths teacher said M1 is easier than M2, so the workload for M1 will be less.

Dear Chan-2,
Thank you very much for your kind advice.  I learnt that studying Bio required a lot of hard work and extra effort to get a good grade as compared with Econ,  is that right?  Is it  make more sense to study M1 and Econ rather than Bio and M1. please advise. Thanks a lot!

What's your kid's choice in university? If he/she aims for MBBS or BBA, the choice can be different, don't just focus on good grades.
I know some friend's kid, who aims for good grades, at the end his choices are limited.

From my son's personal experience, he can get high grades with quite certainty in phi, chem, bio and math, if he work hard, though he don't like bio.  My son has no idea on econ, and i cannot expect the same result from him with econ, though I personally think Econ may be easier.
For some students, my son's most classmates, they opt for m2 and the math teacher said m2 is not more difficult than pure math (hkce).
My son choose m1, and your option 1.
I think if your son will consider studying engineering, then choose m2.

According to your son's choice of programs, BBA or Engg, his choices of subject are:

BBA - Chem, Phy, Economics, no need for M1/M2
Engg - Phy, Chem, M1 >> M2

If you check with university admission requirements, 3 electives not necessary have better chances......
