學校網頁說全校有約60% native English speakers. 但沒有說明小學部佔多少,但至少每班有一位NET班主任,即30位,但很多都是黃皮膚的ABC,BBC。他/她們在校內從不講中文,對家長亦然。英語則十分native. 從校內老師相片集的名字看,則約有30%是外國名字。

My son also study IB, 80%+ teachers are from overseas and all speak in English, but only foreign teachers teach English with Qualification count as NET. I can't imagine so many "NET" in a school, if the school is not a Language School.

I also double check other schools, like DBSPD, they clearly listed all teachers qualification and also Identified who s NET and NPT, it has 7 NET.  As parents, more is better, to create a better language environment......

我想你指的NET應該是 Native-speaking English Teacher.

我同意Native English speakers not necessary Native-speaking English Teachers.

如果只是Native English speaker,而沒有edb要求的英文教學學歷TEFL/TESL, 便不能做NET。想到這裏,我懷疑之前我所說的CKY小學部至少有30位NET也可能是錯的!他們無疑是Native English speakers, 但在小學教英文是不需要有TEFL/TESL的。真對不起!

不過沒有TEFL/TESL對CKY的英文老師是沒有問題的,因為他們不是Teach English as a Foreign Language or a Second Language, 他們是當first language來教的。

至於如果不是language school. 為甚麼要這多Native English speakers呢?這點很易理解,亦很自然︰一般津小以粵語教非語文科,教師自然是Native Cantonese speakers.
國際學校以英文教非語文科,教師也自然是Native English speakers. 所以如果某學校以英文教非語文科,教師便自然是Native English speakers. 除非請不到,或雖然不太native,但其他表現足以補償。這類老師,CKY肯定有。

我仔讀FSSAS, 學校至少係10位以上NET, 小一每班有兩位班主任, 每班班主任係由一名外籍教師(NET)搭配一名曾在海外留學的本地教師擔任,  除中文科以及普通話科外, 全部SUBJECT係由英語授課,  學校採用Homeroom模式, 即係小一並不是專科專教, 大部份科目係由班主任授課(英文, Maths, TS), 國際學校都係採用此模式, 小朋友與老師關係更密切.  開學已一個學期, 小兒上學大部份時間都係以英語同老師溝通, 發音十分準確, 我好滿意.

Thanks for your reply and clarification, we all learn something here.
I just highlight the difference only.

I nearly passed the struggle of education issues in HK, I am glad to see some DSS doing extremely well and have their own approaches, its a healthy phenomenon and benefit the society and us.

Personal, I prefer not to romanize which school better others, each school has its strengths and weaknesses, we need to select the RIGHT school with wisdom after evaluating our scenario.

So, any CKY parents or teachers tell us how many QUALIFIED Native-speaking English Teachers (NET, thanks wingsma's clarification.)in Primary and Secondary Divisions?

We can learn from them and use that as one of the yardstick to consider the language environment of the schools.

甚麼是qualified NET?  若果指持TEFL/TESL才是qualified,那麼DBSSPCCPS或崇真又有幾個持TEFL/TESLNET呢?以我認為,NET──一詞,是向政府申請額外資助時而用的名詞。況且,TEFL/TESL是否那些NET將英語作第二語言教學時所持的資格呢?若是,那些將英語作第一語言教學的學校是否就不會將此作考慮呢?國際學校的英語教師又需否持有TEFL/TESL這資格呢?若CKY將英語作第一語言來教,情況就與國際學校有點類似了。

Pls read the title again and you may clam down to discuss peacefully. No need to be so defensive, I have no intention to challenge CKY, read my post #12 also.

I also shared about more English Speaking Teachers to establish better language environment in the campus.

我只不過覺得這條問題只問CKY很有趣啫,我都想知其它學校的情況嘛!

CKY的老師有點像聯合國,CKY的家長真係數唔到有幾多個NET。而學校網址所示:60%是NET.

唔明呢一句.  即如果我係地道香港人但用英文教數學, 我就係一名Net? 如果係, Native又點解呢

因以字面解, NET係一位用英文為母語而有教師資格嘅人, 如果唔係, 咁English Teacher 同 Native English Teacher有分別嗎?

Having read thro different links, I always found that every school have her own strength and vision and arguments on comparsion is not really necessary.


While CKY is a private school not subject to EB's purview, I noted EB has published the recruitment of NETs in which some of you may be interested



Recruitment of Native-speaking English Teachers (NETs)
for Primary Schools

(Salary Range: HK$21,175 to 43,010 per month)

The Education Bureau cordially invites you to apply for the Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) positions.

ROLE


NETs are required to teach English as a second language to Hong Kong students and assist in teacher and curriculum development in public-sector primary schools (for students aged between 6 and 12) and schools for students with special educational needs.


QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT

The applicant should be a native-speaker of English or possess native-speaker English competence ^.


Preference will be given to applicants with experience in teaching English as a second/foreign language.

For appointment in special schools, preference will be given to applicants who have special education training and/or experience in teaching students with special educational needs.

Appointment of NETs should be considered according to the following order of priority:

Category 1 (to be appointed at Assistant Primary School Master/Mistress (APSM) rank, MPS pt. 15-29)

(i)
a bachelor’s degree in English (i.e. majoring in English Language or English Literature or English Studies or Linguistics# or a Modern Language#) from a Hong Kong university or equivalent;

(ii)
a recognized teacher training qualification in primary education; and

(iii)
a Teaching of English as a Foreign Language or a Second Language (TEFL/TESL) qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*.

Category 2 (to be appointed at APSM rank, MPS pt. 15-29)

(i)
a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a Hong Kong university or equivalent;

(ii)
a recognised teacher training qualification in primary education; and

(iii)
a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*.


In the event that candidates meeting the requirements in Category 1 - 2 cannot be recruited, consideration may be given to appoint teachers with the following qualifications:

Category 3 (to be appointed at APSM rank, MPS pt. 15-29)

(i)
a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a Hong Kong university or equivalent;

(ii)
a recognised teacher training qualification; and

(iii)
a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*.


Category 4
(to be appointed at APSM rank, MPS pt. 15-29, with salary bar at
MPS Point 20)

(i)
a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a Hong Kong university or equivalent; and

(ii)
a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*.  


Category 5 (to be appointed at Certificated Master/Mistress (CM) rank, MPS pt. 14-24)

(i)
a recognised teacher’s certificate obtained after at least 2 years’ full-time study or equivalent; and

(ii)
a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*.

The answer is very simple, because the initiator use CKY as reference and title, so I am curious to know the number as yardstick.

I picked DBSPD and SPCCPS as reference because I know their website very well, eventually I know CKY website pretty well. DBS has a tradition to list out all qualifications of current teachers both primary and secondary, e.g. BSc, BA, MPhil, MA, MSc, Dip Ed and which institution. SPCCPS listed the number of NET in Annual Report.

You can ask the principal, easy.....

If I were CKY parents and or school administrators, i am proud of that, such new school and can be as benchmark in HK, Bravo ...... Keep up the good works and open to both positive and negative comments.
