I always heard that when a school makes a transition to IB, the first few years' results are always disastrous or below expectation. Now that many schools (such ESF and others) have made a successful change to IB, I wonder if what I heard is true from the past experience. Could parents recall what happened in the first few years of the transition? I realise that each school is different, but I just wonder if it does in general take a few years for the school to get used to the IB system. Could any parents share their experience?

希望以下的朋友案例可供参考!

朋友的孩子念Island school, 大女考GCE A Level, 成绩唔错, 往英念大学了. 细女是ESF的第一年IB 生, 勤学过姐姐很多, IB结果只的32分. 要到处撲大学. 佷狼狈. 自此朋友到处奉劝其它孩子改读A Level . 一些父母怕了IB, 亦提早让孩子往英留学预备GCE A Level,希望取得更出色成绩入大学.

最近两年, 成绩稳定性提高, 少听到因为逃避IB而出洋了!

Thanks so much! You're ever so helpful! I took a look at Island School's website and it says its average IB scores were 32 (in 2009), 33 (in 2010) and 35.1 (in 2011). So as you said, it's indeed getting better. I guess your friend's daughter took the IB exam in 2009 which's rather unfortunate. Do you know if all 5 ESF secondary schools started providing IB program in 2007 (and had their 1st batch of IB graduates in 2009)? If there had been other ESF schools changing to IB before Island School did, then the situation was even more worrying because ESF/Island School should have previous experience dealing with the transition and made it smoother than otherwise had been the case. Did the other ESF schools or IS have the same experience with their IB results?

I've just done some research on ESF's IB results. It seems that apart from Sha Tin College (which started IB in 2001), all the other 4 ESF secondary schools had their first batch of IB students graduated in 2009. Their average IB scores are as follows:-

KGV - 32.1 (in 2009), 33 (in 2010) and 34.4 (in 2011)
South Island - 32.77 (in 2009), 33.7 (in 2010) and 34.4 (in 2011)
West Island - 33 (in 2009), 34.1 (in 2010) and 34.4 (in 2011)

So basically, all 4 ESF schools's IB results are improving since they started the program. I wonder what their average A Levels results were like prior to 2009. Did their average A levels results tally with an IB score of 32/33 points or were they substantially better?

Hi Bobby,

Among all ESF schools Shatin College was the only one who started IB curriculum since the foundation in 1982. Other ESF schools includes KGV, West Island, Island, South Island started the transition in 2009. Canadian, Yew Chung, Singapore Intl just took IB exam recently. And I heard that GSIS will take the 1st IB exam in 2014. It's inevtiable that all schools are struggling the same difficulties in transition.

For your reference that both CIS , FIS and LiPoChun providing IB program when the schools were founded and always having brilliant IB results .

In my viewpoint nearly all international schools' IB examination results are getting improvement that their learning and experience would spread around and benefit to those following schools. There's NO SECRET in education!

You mean SPCC and DBS, or other new DSS schools......

Both schools offer Pre-IB before IBDP and allow some students move back to NSS, after trying for a few weeks in Pre-IB. Also, they have interview(s) to screen those IB students.

Hi Anchan,

Both SPCC and DBS are exceptional good at preparing IB curriculum and then offering it to the most well prepared students. Those students' learning attitude , aims and value should strive to become responsible global citizens.

教育, 价值观和远见是从小累积的, 不是短暂的尝试和学习就能改变过来的. 佷多LS 学校跟风开IB班, 我佷怀疑大家是追逐成绩, 针对拿高分而定读书策略, 而忘记学习IB 的教育精神.

I take your point, but the school and the board may not switch the whole school to private IB school.
What do you think about LPCUWC? If LPC can, why not for SPCC & DBS........

其实收生时大部分考生连一般公开试result 如IGCSE result 都未出, 只靠学校校长写几句评语而已, 关键是面试时的真性情, LPCUW老师有 X-ray 眼睛, 好易分出合适读他们课程的孩子.

无独有偶, 认识几个家庭的孩子, 哥哥考进了, 过几年后弟弟又轻松被取录.  这点不是巧合.  亦无因siblings 而加分, 弟弟哥哥性格兴趣样子完全不同, 但个款和家教就十分近似他们的要求.

如家有孩子好有性格抱负, 英文不错, 又能负担每月两万元学费共两年, 应该去见识吓!  考唔到亦唔所谓, 就当LPCUW唔识货, 走眼!  回家继续努力!

You may aware I wrote my son's LPC admission experience in Jan 2011 in EK.
I will say DBS and SPCC will be fine in IB, as their screen processes also target for certain characteristics of IBers.

Both schools not focus on 10A, but all rounded, just check their EAS student number......

LPC used HAST appitude test two years ago to replace HKCEE and IGCSE. DBS & SPCC used eassy writing, interviews and internal exam results to screen students.

Based on my daughter's comment, students from SPCC is exceptionally good in IB. Their prep year really equips them with the knowledge and skills for answering IB questions. Two SPCC girls top Chinese A class. A SPCC girl top Economics and Biology. However, the boys from DBS seem not...

哇！原来你有甘多资料，　好彩我平时有备课，　都答得两句！　　

往者已矣！　无谓再睇A Level, 连港大都宣布持IB 学历者可以少念一年大学，　就知ＩＢ的认受性．　有得读就要读，不要太过计算最终成绩．　ＩＢ的学习是一个过程，　孩子必然终身受用的！

如果担心学校未有充足预备，就上网看IB curriculum 和理念，快些预先操练孩子成为＇自动波＇，　以补不足吧．

有朋友孩子当年念ＫＪＳ，唔读ＫＧＶ而往Shatin College , 为的是Shatin College 是ＩＢcurriculum，后孩子读到year 11, 拿得full scholarship 往读 World United College, Italy. 好开心！（全港得两个）

最怕传媒的误导，每年我会细阅各IS 的公开试成绩，暂时得出一个有趣的指标是：

a) IGCSE 考得极佳绩的学校，不保证两年后同级的学生的IB 成绩斐然，　可能性是：
１）优秀学生走左，　或　　２）　精读ＩＧＣＳＥ的学生，　不等于精读IB.
b) 成绩非常稳步增长的是CIS, 越来越接近LPCUW水平．
c) 连ＧＳＩＳ的甘有料的学校都甘保守地做IB transition, 其他学校唔应该甘急进！

我是看了该文才跟你打招呼的．当时的感觉是：

1) 那个阿妈是傻的，讲得甘;詳細，　唔惊人地个仔同她争．

2) 她的儿子是超班天才，　阿妈自信心爆棚．

３）她为人好伟大，帮助他人为快乐之本．

到今天仲未搅请楚你是那一类，　应该是 2) and 3) 的混合体吧！

我的資料頂多是碎料, 全部都係googled返嚟.

I asked about ESF's A Levels result prior to 2009 because I understand that an IB score of 32 was more or less equivalent to the grades of "ABB" in A Levels.  Hence if the 4 ESF secondary schools' average A Level grades were well above "ABB" in say 2008, then perhaps the sudden drop in result could be explained by the difficult transition from A Levels to IB.  I know nothing is conclusive but it does give me a pointer.

It's pretty difficult not to place too much emphasis on the result as you suggested.  I don't really want my kid "佷狼狈t的到处撲大学" as you friend's daughter's did.  I am not worrying about the IB program itself.  I am just not too comfortable with the transition as my kid would be one of the 1st batch to do IB in his school.  Initially I was thinking of transfering my kid to another long established IB school in Hong Kong, but the problem is that my kid's Chinese is pretty bad and it probably won't work.  The only realistic option left is to send him overseas.  Very 傷腦筋!

I don't know if what we do at home is enough at the end of the day because I have a feeling that the school's guidance is very important.  However, we can't really expect the school to work at top gear in the first year of the transition, can we?

I am not worrying about the IB program itself.  I am just not too comfortable with the transition as my kid would be one of the 1st batch to do IB in his school. 佷同意你的担心. 对IB有充分经验的学校和老师十分重要! 好些老师是作短期进修后, 取得IB老师的资格, 並非有良好的IB 教学经验的, 这点会对成效是有一定影响. 当初有老师更非常抗拒IB教学, 又话辞职,  又话要告学校违约, 唔多想花时间进修. 固执己见, 这类人就算有文凭都唔会教得好.

IB 内的Chinese 有如下不同可選:
Chinese A  (higher and standard  level) - 1st language
Mandarin B (higher and standard level) - 2nd language
Chinese ab

If you son doesn't like Chinese, he can choose new langauges in IB years such as French, Spanish, German, Japanese ab, those curriculums are for beginners.  My friend's son is good at French, but need to study Italy ab while he took IB in Italy.  You can discuss the language issue with school.
