My son was born in November 02, my friend suggested me to let my son to study in Sep 2006. Because she said if study in 2005 (做細仔) is too hard for him.

My girl was borned in Oct 02, I let her study K1 in Oct 05.  She's very active and talked a lot in full sentences already.  Actually, she's studying in nursery already.

Some people said it's different for boys and girls.  Since girl's speech is usually earlier and more stable therefore it's good to enter school eariler.  However, boys are usually late in speech and thus better to enter school later.

But in my opinion, as long as your kid can tell when he needs to go to toilet and do not need wearing diaper in daytime by Aug 05, then he should go to school in 2005.  My reason is - can you do body exercise with him regularly everyday, can you sing, draw and tell stories with him everyday regularly?  There're many learning examples in school and different stimulation available in one-year school life which you can't provide at home.  If you delay to 2006, then he's learning is delayed.

For example, I did diaper training for my girl starting at 22nd month.  It's only a few successful trial in 2 months training.  But once she entered school at 2 years old, she got it right in 1 week (5 school days).  Why and How?  She learnt from her peers.

So, have you apply any school for your boy?  Most of them closed application and giving result already.  But usually they still have vacancies for pm class, except those really famous schools.

我讀中學時﹐全班考第一的同學是全班最細的﹐她同最大的同學年齡差距有成3年﹐咁咪又考第一﹐其實現在讀幼稚園的年齡差距相差最多都是一年到﹐真的要想清楚要不要遲一年才報考﹐有時細讀書也有好處﹐起碼是全班最細﹐老師也會錫多些﹐哈。。。哈。。。

i totally agree to charlene. my boy was born in oct 98 & is now studying primary one. just like charlene's girl, my boy used diapers on the 1st day of k1 & stopped using it on the 5th day.

parents really can't judge their abilities some how, just give them a try & trust them! kids nowadays are terribly clever in learning. by the way, there's no harm too. i would suggest u to let him enrol to the kindergarden, as if u find it's too hard for him, u can always stop & wait for another year. right?

most of my boys' schoolmates are even younger than him! for the younger kids, maybe their academic results as well as their handwritings are not the best, but it really doesn't matter. the knowledge they learn is the most important.

should u still in doubt, please post & let us share our experiences.

My son was born in Dec02. I plan to let him study K1 in 2005. He'll join pre-nursery (2yrs old class) next month. He's too bored at home and I want him to have social gathering and learn something in school.

I'll see his performance in the coming 6mths and defer K1 if he's not ready on physical or mental side. I know some taking one more year pre-nursery (ie. total 1.5yrs). However, it depends on the performance and developmental progress of each child. Some are advance and some are behind. You should thinik about your son's performance first.

Is your son going to playgroup or pre-nursery now?

I totally agree with all of you that we should let our child to have a go at kinder even they are a bit younger. My son is a Dec 2002 baby, just like Maria-lai, I would let him go to nursery in March and go for k1 in Sept 2005. We'll see how he does.

I have first hand experience of being the smallest in class, I went to k1 at the age of 2 yrs and 3 months, not kidding! I don't know was it legal or not then but both of my parents worked and it was my brother taking care of me, his primary school is at the same building as my kinder so he can takes me off school everyday.

Academically I had no problem, always the top 10% in class but socially, I remembered I didn't quite understand what my classmates talked about half of the time. Especially if they said mean things to me, I didn't understand or didn't know how to respond. I only felt fully at par after P.2. But I was always a happy kid and I was always the top 10% in class even in University. And my primary/secondary schoolmates are still my best friends!

I guess every child is different, the above is only my own experience.

I totally agreed with all of u. Sometimes there is advantage being the small one. My son was borned in Dec 2002 too, He is going to K1 in 2005. Why not?
Just like what yiyko said, remembered our school life the elder one not always the smartist one.

Joannes was born on Dec 27, 2002, barely big enough to start K1 in Sep 2005!  Being small kid is not a problem:

1. My smartest sec. school and univ classmate is Dec small kid.  He got 8A and 5A in cert and A-level!

2. If he delays to 2006, he will waste one whole year.  He will be too bored staying at home.  If sending him to nursery, why not K1?

3. His height is at par with normal 3 yr old child already!  If he enters K1 at 3 yrs and 9 mths, he will be as big as 技安!

4. Children's potential cannot be underestimated.

So I encourage all small kids to start K1 asap!
