My son is now studying at a very traditional boys school in Wanchai.  He is a marginal case of dyslexia(讀寫障礙) .  I am thinking of applying for change to St. Stephen's primary for P4 at Sept 2012 which has a more active teaching method.

Any parent can share their experience of applying for admission level to St Stephen's primary from other primary schools?  Any support from the school for students with special learning needs like dyslexia?

BTW, what is the admission policy for P6 St. Stephen's primary to St. Stephen College?  Do they get a good chance of admission to St Stephen's College if the P6 students pass all the major subjects?

Thank you.

Hello, I am not 100% sure but from what I researched, I do not think SSCPS fits your child.

When you mention SSCPS teaches through 'active method', the school does so by prompting students to ask questions, ask them to work through finding their own examples...etc., but they still use 'traditional' way of teaching mainly. Also, the academic requirements are quite high indeed and you may feel pressure to keep up.

You may want to look for those really use 'active teaching method' schools, e.g. Creative, CKY, Victoria etc., but I think you should really check with the school to see if they have any support on special educational needs children. These schools emphasis learning through working on projects, proactively seeking information, analyze info and summarize your own opinion etc..

BTW, Kau Yan in Western district will definitely suits your child. The school principal there is very kind and also supports SEN children, you may want to call her, make an appointment and talk to her.

Good luck and merry xmas!

回復 CandyTheMom 的帖子

Thanks CandyTheMom.

My son tried to apply for admission to Kau Yan P3 this summer but failed to get a place.  Their website also showed a very strange message saying the 插班 application for 2012-2013 is closed already even though I checked their website from time to time and did not realise when they had started.  I am thinking of trying again this year but I am not sure if he can make it.  Another thing I am worried about is that Kau Yan has no direct link other than 滙基中學 in Kowloon side and I am not too familiar about this Secondary School.

My son is  a marginal case of dyslexia, his main problem is  recognising and memorising Chinese characters but he is OK with English and Maths.  The school that he is studying is a very traditional local school and the teachers are very old fashioned and they are not giving much leeway for his special needs beacuse he is not a clear case of dyslexia(his scores are not very bad).  The main thing is that his self-esteem is quite low because he has poor academic results and the curriculum is taught very fast.

May I ask why you think St Stephen is not a school suitable for children with special needs?  I have heard from other parents that their school curriculum is a bit relaxed that the very typical traditional schools and students seems to enjoy school life.

Any views on Victoria?  My only impression is that it is a very commercial school and the conduct of the students seems to be so so.

Thank you.
