Hi there, I'm living in London. I have a 17-month-old boy who's starting to talk a lot. As we are in an English-speaking country, I'm really worrying about his Cantonese.

Therefore, with a few parents here, we started a Cantonese group for babies and toddlers some months ago. However, we are actually running out of ideas of what to do with our kids, especially when there's not a lot of resources around. Is there anyone who can recomment us something? It doesn't really matter even if we can only get that in Hong Kong as I can probably get someone to post it over.

It'd be really very helpful to receive your reply! Looking forward to hearing from you all soon!

Thanks!

Candy

Candy,

At this age you can let your baby listen to nursery rhymes in Cantonese (not putonghua if you want him to learn your mother tongue first).  There are plenty in HK.  Singing, playing and reading aloud is the best way to introduce a language to young children.

You can refer to Greenfield Publishing's website for some tips of chinese learning for overseas children:
http://greenfieldhk.com/oversea.php

Their series "我愛讀" & "我自己會讀" is very useful among kids.  Word cards and CD (Both Cantonese & Putonghua) are provided.  You can have a look at the sample pages.  Let me know if you need help.
