Before I answer your question, I wanna ask why Japan? Does your child speak fluent Japanese already?
One of the biggest barriers to studying in Japan is language. If your child can't speak Japanese at all/ not good at the moment, it would be really hard for him to take up the Japanese curriculum cause' there is almost no English medium schools in Japan (except International Schools of course, but your child won't be admitted as the parents don't stay there) Besides, not many schools in Japan accept foreign students. Actually, you can't find more than around 5 at most as I recall.
On top of that, Japanese education is much like the Chinese one. There is, of course, a huge difference between Japanese education to those in UK/US/CA. Japanese students study really hard for school. Many of them go to tutorial schools like the Hong Kong local students. They also have this culture of trying hard to get into the top schools. There are also rankings for high school in Japan.
There are two paths to enter a Japanese university: by normal entry with the other Japanese students, or as a foreign students. The first requires you to be already studying at high school in Japan and you take their high school completion exam. The second requires you to take Japanese language test and one or two tests on particular subjects as I remember.
