Hi Ian, we were just being informed by the kindergarten that our child is not able to proceed from pre-school to K1.  However, we did not apply any other school.  Is there any way that we can apply for school now?
Sorry for giving you trouble as we are very panic.

Thanks alot.

Sorry about the unexpected news.  Just wonder why they don't inform you sooner or there were never any guarantee before?

Anyway, there will always be seats available in kindergarten level as no matter how high the birth rates have increased in recent years, the capacity cannot be reached in overall.

In reality, very few kindergartens will be full after September, except for the most popular ones.  So, don't even try those since they all have very long waiting list which they will never reach the bottom o it.

My suggestion is to first go through this kindergarten list http://www.chsc.hk/kindergarten/tc/index.htm where you can find kindergartens in your nearby area.  Don't be too picky at first and just try to call those and see if they can give you a chance to interview first.  Try to secure one place first.

Again, less than 3% of all kindergartens will be full.  You can find these information for each kindergartens from the link I gave you above.  You can find the number of students attending and can tell many are not 100%.  So, what you can do is to pick one or two less popular ones and try to show your sincerity to them from now on.  Then just hope for the best to come.

I hope this can help you and no need to get too nervous.  Remember the only reason why many kindergartens are full now is because there are many children who have multiple offers.  Once these are released, a chain of openings will become available.

Ian

Hi Ian, really thanks alot for your kind advise.

In fact, they just informed us in late Feb.  The class teacher told me that it's general all other parents applied other kindergartens.  Therefore, they had expect we had other offers on hand.  I told her we trusted the kindergarten and my child loves the school.  Therefore, we did not apply any other kindergartens.  As a parent, I think I should learn more about the Hong Kong education system.  I did not expect that they are so harsh to students at this age (2.5).

Anyway, many thanks for your kind help. I will try all the kindergartens near my house and hopefully can get some feedback.

Hi, Kay,I am one of the York's parent, my two daughters are studying there PN, besides the fees are relatively high, everything is good and I believe your child can learn a lot of things and happy.  Espcially good english, they have enough support on it.

I really want to know which KG you are studying and have you tell you situation to them? As Ian said if you show your sincere, they may finally give you offer as they are avaliable.

Good Luck to you!

Hi kay2_wong,

I guess it must be a good problem for you now that you have choices to make.

However, I have no knowledge of Deborah International so I can only comment as it is a nearby kindergarten.  Since it is in your neighborhood, have you heard anything about it which you can share with me?

More to that, any plan that you have concerning primary school?

Ian

Hi Meimei,
Many thanks for your kind comment and it's really useful.

Hi Ian,

I am thinking about Primary schools like St. Mary and Maryknoll.  All our family members are Catholic, I heard that there are some points but I don't know if it really helps.

For Deborah, I only heard that it's easy to get in and lots of Japanese studying at the moment.

In fact, I am not sure about the Hong Kong education system.  Therefore, don't know how to choose and hope you can give me some advise.

Many thanks for your great help.

Hi kay2_wong,

Frankly speaking, the two primary schools which you mentioned are probably few of the most popular choices in the Kowloon pennisula.  Unless you are old girl of Maryknoll (which I guess you would have mentioned if you are), the 5 points of being Catholic wouldn't help you for Maryknoll.  For the case of St. Mary's, being a Catholic would at least give you a chance (at least it still does) but luck will play a much bigger factor if your interest is on either one of them.

Where is this Deborah International that have gave you the offer?  Since you are aiming at gov't aided schools, then needing to take school bus to go to York may not seems worthing to do.  Unless you would also try to apply private or direct subsidized schools which require interviews.  May be you don't have any ideas concering primary school admission yet?

In simple words, if you are interested in gov't or gov't aided schools (no tuition fees required), there won't be interviews (well except door-knocking) so which kindergartens the children study won't play a huge factor.

Ian

Hi Ian,
Thanks alot for your kind information.

However, I am not sure about the difference between the government funded school and non-government funded school.

Also, I am quite confuse and wondering how the points count.  You mentioned that I may have 5 points.  Kindly help advise if there is any source that I can find the information.

Many thanks for your great help.

Best Regards,
Kay

Hi Ian,
In fact, I was an old student of Holy Angel Canossian Primary School.  I am not sure if it's still a famous school now.  Also, is it a high chance for my daughter to get into the school.  If yes, is it gurantee that she can proceed to St Mary Secondary school?

Thanks alot

I guess in the simplest words, I can only say receiving gov't funds would have more rules to follow while those won't don't accept it (or partially) have less restrictions.  Of course there are more but you can take time to understand.

For primary admission process, simply refer to this:

http://www.chsc.hk/primary/en/app_method_a.htm

haha, that would make it simpler.

You daughter would have total of 25 points which should be pretty secured to get a place at Holy Angel.  Since they are now one-dragon with SMCC,  this would mean the seat there will be guaranteed.
