What I did was I used my figure to point to the words as I read. I read one sentence (I think stage 1 only has 1 sentence on each page) and then explained to my girl the meaning in Chinese. At a point when I knew that she understood the meaning, I did not explain to her in Chinese any more for that particular book. No need to force her to memorise. Your girl will ask you to read the same book again and again. At a point, you will feel so bored and tired but don't give up, as your girl will still be interested in listening. As you read to her repeatedly, she will memorise the whole book by heart (2 year old is super in memorising things). I think you can buy about 10-15 books at a time, so that you can read them in turn to keep yourself interested in the reading. When your girl get bored with the first batch, you can buy another set. You can also borrow them from the library but I suggest you have some at home at the beginning, as you can read to your girl any time when she feel interested. Also, you do not know how long it takes before the kid get bored with the book.
Through the repeating action (reading again and again), your girl will start recognise the words.
Unless your girl can say and understand quite a lot of English words, I think phonics is not very useful at this stage. Phonics is for children who already speak English at a certain level. By learning phonics, the children figure out he pronounication of the words and then connect them with what they speak daily.
Hope this help
