I have taken my daugher to PK interview. I am impressed by their interview arrangement when comparing with other DSS interviews in the following ways:
1) Warm up exercises for kids, games and plays both addressing diverse needs of kids, e.g. with diverse toys, bus, lego, barbie, chess etc.... I am impressed because most of the DSS school interview design, thier selection of toys are very limited, usually limited to those "educational" but gendered biased toys - lego ....kids' interest are diverse... this school address diversities of kids, excellent impression!!
2) They have a sense that children's anxiety can be reduced by plays and games - in that way, children are more able to express themeselves with full expressions ---- great impression then!!
3) The interview address languages of Mandarin, English and Cantonese - that's great when comparing with those only use English as a basic language in interview... you know in actual situation, those DSS schools are using these three languages in teaching, why you have to select children with fluenct English .. english can be learned in school, not a big deal that at the age of 5, that they are not have this fluency. ..
4) The teacher shared that they are not testing knowledge at this interview. They are finding kids with a motivation and curiousity on learning ( I totally agree with that). In my expreience of interviews this year, the schools are testing kids with maths (7-2), sentence structures, comprehensions and how to write teachers' name (it's a really crazy world asking kids of 5 year old to write the teacher's name!!)
5) My child's memory in the interview:
a) playing games and share with others in games
b) Chinese lesson - drawing, playing
c) English lession - listen to a story and interact with the teacher, responding to the questions |
