Dear Parents

I need advice from you. My son just graduated from Kingston Kinder.

Kingston Primary or RC??

I love Kingston's Chinese programme and Small class policy. But RC provides a better campus and "ONE DRAGON" as well.

Any Advice?

sabun,
As I know that most of the students from RC are HK chinese, do they speak English at school during lunch time or break?

Your child can speak fluent English?

Dear Sabun,

Kingston is definitely a quality school but I don't like its secondary section at Sha Tau Kok. I was worried about the keen competition of admission at a later stage (say Year 5 or 6). That's why my kid changed from Kingston to RC at the early stage. To my surprise, RC is better than what I first expected to be like. Chinese is good. Maths is good too. Taking the Chinese as a subject, RC students' Chinese may not be as strong as Kingston, since there is a Chinese class teacher at Kingston and students of Kingston have more Chinese exposure... But I would say RC Math is stronger.
Be frank, both are good schools with a different scale as my child has had experiences with both schools. If you opt for the  "through train", then forget about Kingston. The truth is that there are fewer and fewer students for higher and higher grades at Kingston Primary School because of "its linked secondary section at Sha Tau Kok". Look for more information about the ICHK (the secondary section). I'm sure that helps with your decision making...

Dear Kaka 1228,

RC is using local Chinese textbooks (written for local Chinese students): Longman Chinese (traditional Chinese characters). There are 4 books in a set for a grade (e.g., 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D). For a 7 year-old kid at RC (local school age: P2, but being in P3 at RC), the kid learns Longman Chinese Books 1C and 1D in the first term, and Books 2A and 2B in the second term. Although the kid lags behind the local kid of the same age for half a year, I have been very pleased with such a learning progress for an international school kid. What is more, like a local school, there is Chinese homework (Longman Chinese workbooks), dictation work, vocabulary writing and even "Chinese exams" (for my child's Chinese group) for the 4 skills of speaking, listening, reading & writing.
About the extra Chinese learning, I just got some other Longman Chinese supplementary exercise books of the same grade from the bookshop and asked my child to do them at home. U can't say that's enough practice or not, but my child has just started to do Chinese for about one year. He had zero learning of Chinese in his early learning  stage. Of course, Kingston's Chinese is more harder, but I can see my child can still keep up with his Chinese learning at RC after changing from Kingston to RC. By the way, Maths is a plus for RC as Maths at RC is harder than that of Kingston.

Can you explain what this mean?

I have thought that parents should be happy with a new secondary school, and should stay with Kingston if it really is a good school.

Dear Minggrace,

My daughter is going to study in P.1 in RCHK.  Can you share more with us about what makes you think RC being a good school ?  Though I'll know it soon, I just want to know more earlier, as she's our first daughter.  I and my wife are eager to know more.

Thanks in advance.

Eric

My daughter is now studying in one of the top local through-train kinder in hk side...however I am thinking to transfer her to Kingston Y1 after the completion of K2...She can speak fairly fluent english...but i am worring whether there would be a long waiting list for Kingston??

No bother at all.  I applied RC in around FEB? I just download the application form from RC websit and posted to RC. I didn't arrange any profile for my SON. He was lucky to got an interview with around 10 applicants. I guess the question isn't complicate, like asked, ur favorite toy, movie, songs bla blabla.. in english. ( my son told me that he even cried a bit coz he missed me soo much during the interview).

Kingston really do have a loonnnnnng waiting list for Kinder and more and more in Primary now. I really appreciate the priciple Eliza Wong for what she manage both Kinder and now also Primary, she is really caring, remember all student  name @ school and quick feedback. i think it's easier to apply Y2 coz some of the students may switch to local pirmary after Y1. just submit your application. it's no harm :)

Anyone know how is the discipline and behavior at RC secondary? Many friends tell me that you may see many intimate comportment all around the school by Sec students.

That makes me worry.
