Re: 培道小學同聖約瑟英文小學(kln bay), 邊間好?
anna_leung,

Actually, if you have no better choice on hand yet, I would say go ahead and register, then go on with the EMB 2nd Round and try your luck.  The school lets you go for the 2nd round.  (==>讀的話,就心服口服。)

My dilemma is, I have both this school and TSL on hand - the 2 schools have different teaching methods; the secondary school allocation is equally undesirable though the primary schools themselves are OK; one is a boys' school the other one is co-ed; TSL is run by PLK while this is run by the Catholic church and I prefer church-run schools though I am an athiest.
My son likes both schools.  TSL for its Halloween celebrations, St. Jo for being a boys' school.  So he gives me different answers when asked.

Pros :
1.  The teachers are quite nice (friendly) and young ==> not as set in their ways as the oldies in some other schools.
2.  The principal is also quite nice, though protective of the school - but this is what a principal should do.
Not pushy.   (I don't like the salesman type of principal.)
3.  Since it uses IPA to teach pronunciation, students can speak / pronounce English perfectly.
4.  To us, the school is very easily accessible (by bus from home), not much congestion along the way.  So my hubby and I can take our son to school before going to work if we like.
5.  A boys' school, no distraction from girls when in P5/6.
6.  No need to compete with girls in same grade at school.
7.  Church-run ==> more dedication.  (I dislike schools being run by commercial, profit-making organizations.)

Cons :
1.  School admin quite stubborn (僵化) - refused to accommodate my request to register a day earlier.  (My son's KG has an outing this Sat.am, clashed with reg.time.)
2.  The principal made at least 1 grammatical error in the short admission letter.  So need to monitor Engl. grammar closely.
3.  Quite a lot of homework.  Overall workload is quite heavy.  Traditional teaching methods.  (But this would apply to most schools.)
4.  My son is quite naughty so I am a bit worried that he might not be ready for the traditional type of teaching/learning.  (But if we could all make it, why can't he ?)
5.  升中 - P6派中一不太理想?(An impression from info boards which I saw when submitting appl, but not sure because this info is not available from school's website.)

Is this of any help to you ?

Quite a lot of schools purport to use Engl as the medium of instruction but the teachers themselves must be of sufficiently high calibre to support this.  I think the teachers here are OK, and after all, it wasn't too difficult to get admitted.  Seems that a lot of parents go for the more "famous" schools for their name, and forget this one.  The school is of low profile, and most parents don't even know that such a school exists.  I think if the secondary school were better, competition for this primary school would be much greater.

The above sort of summarizes my considerations and actually I quite like this school after having been there twice already (once for application, then for the interview). |
