Hi dear all,

My son is 3 years old and  I would like to find an English course for him. I prefer to let him stick to that learning centre for longer time (at least K1 to K3), and also may consider to take the Cambridge Exam course later.

Has anyone take English course in ESF or Bristish Council or ABC Pathways? Please kindly share your experience and comment. Many Thanks!

Hi esther_lam_ny,

My son will go to K1 this Sep too and I am also looking for an English course for him.  Same as you, I am now considering British Council, ESF and ABC Pathway.  Have you heard MLC?  They also have Cambridge English course.

My kid had joined the K1 English Course of British Council several months ago.  The course is structured basically like a English playgroup,  with 1 teacher and 1 assistant to 12 children.  K1 children learns English by means of singing English songs, stories telling and art activities (e.g. finger painting, making an birthday hat).  It seems the children enjoys the class very much.  However, we quited after 1 term (i.e. from Sept 09 to Jan 01).  Firstly, I am expecting a NET to teach my kid English by joining British Council, however, the teacher is just a English speaking Chinese (I admit I have some discrimination here).  Secondly, it's location is not convinient, the only location on HK Island is the Admiralty. My kid has to spend more than an hour to and from this learning centre just for 1 hour and 15 minutes of English.  I trust I can easily find an English playgroup near my home conducted by a NET at the timing that we want, so we quit.

Macmillen Language Centre (MLC), it is located in Shatin which is also not convenient to me actually, but considering the class size (Max 6 persons) I think the kid has more chance to practice their English in this small group enviornment.  Also, the course fee is quite competitive.

Re British Council, I got the same problem with you coz Admiralty is not a good location for me too.  But considering the course fee is the cheapest and the renown of the school...is it good to put it on the kid's profile?

Re ESF, it offers different locations and it is a 2 hours course which is perfect for me.  However, I just learned that the class size is 15 which is a bit oversize I think...

Re ABC Pathway, in term of location and group size, it is the best for me, but, it is really expensive...so still struggling...

What is your choice?

I don't think there will be great difference between 12 (BR) vs 15 (ESF) students. Personally, I do not think attending the British Council's English lesson is of value in a kid's profile.  If the school weights English strongly, the interviewer can test your child's English ability by having English interview instead of just relying on the profile saying I have attended the K1-K3 English course of BR.  To me, ESF is also as famous as (or more famous than) BR in teaching English, if ESF fits you both in term of location and time, why not choose ESF if $$ is not a concern.

Sorb,

Thanks for your advice.  Actually, ESF is still my priority but still looking for a better one.  Regarding Kid's profile, it is what I learnt from other BK mother who has a boy accepted by St Paul Co-Ed last year.  She has shared her ECA to us...

esther_lam_ny ,

I just saw your previous message.  It seems YALC is also good.

Anyone can share the experience?

Frankly speaking, no one knows why that boy was being accepted by St Paul Co-ed, it is just happened that you see English course in BR as one of his ECA.  If I were the interviewer, English course in BR is nothing special, as it is not a course that an interview is needed to be admitted.  As long as one has the money, you can enroll, so, to me, no value in the profile.  But awards in competition will help for sure in addition to performance in interview in a fair interview (i.e. not talking about relationship and family backgroud).

Sorb,

Thanks for your sharing.  But you may a bit misunderstand my point.  Of course we know, just putting the ECA on the profile is not enough, the interviewer can identify the English level of the kid during the interview.  But, our point is that the perseverance of studying practice can proof both the parent and kid's studying habit.  On the other way round, if I am the interviewer, I also will not accept the kid who can only speak fluent English but without any stable ECA proof.  Just like an adult find a job, if you can speak fluent English but without good educational background, you may not a good candidate for the company.

Since learning English is a long term business for them, so, I want to find a good and stable English course for my kid.  If ESF or BC is good, hopefully my kid will studying there till primary school, if he likes.

esther_lam_ny

I just checked with my friend too, her kids is studying MCL, her comment is similar to the link, coz the lecturer is not a foreigner, even a native English speaker, so, it is not that good but acceptable.

How about YALC, they offer 2 hrs class at Kolwoon Tong and the class size is 10 only.  It seems good, but the course fee is a bit high.  ESF vs YALC, 320/class VS 380/class...

still thinking...

I think you are living near Kln Tong? Actually my son is attending an English course in Talking Point http://www.talkingpoint.com.hk/ I think both the teacher and course content is ok. Teacher with British ascent and is patient. Max 6 person each class (I like the small class size!).  HK$1,500 for 8 lessons (@1 hr). But the center is quite small. Have free trial lesson. The only reason I want to change is it's far away from my home.
