I am from Canada, I know the education there is very loose compare to Hong Kong ( I studied in Hong Kong local schools, British International school and Canadian schools) but the schools in Hong Kong are way too tense for kids, they just pushes kids to memorize everything it doesn't matter if you have learned it. In Canadian schools it's more fun, but if you are lazy no body seems to care. So we are trying to find something in between. Any suggestions? (I don't know anything about Hong Kong's International schools). Are they as loose?

hi Carolina!

I am from Canada too ! Nice to meet you here. I know totally what you mean.

However, I find that most IS here that are good, will not be like the ones in Canada. There is an intangible "pressure" for schools here no matter IS or local to be more "disciplined" and "stricter"... as that's what the tendency HK parents have.

Of course there are certain IS that are more reputable than others... and for good reasons. Something you need to research into.

There are also a few schools like ISF, and CKY that are English and Putonghua balanced.... but they don't refer themselves as IS.

HKIS, GSIS, CIS are probably your top choices in HK.

SIS is also very favorable, and of course, you can consider CDNIS too.

There are many ESF supportive parents in here, but in my opinion, ESF schools' discipline seems lacking in comparison to the above named.

However, ESF schools are the biggest group of IS and also more affordable.

Just my opinion.

In Canada, maybe public schools are easier, but private schools are not.  For IS in HK, there are different options running under different systems, depends what you want.  Suggest you search for more information from the schools directly, visit the schools and see the students to find out which one match your needs and criteria.  Canadian International School may fit you best; ESF schools are British schools, they have many primary and secondary schools with very long historical records.    As ESF parent for years, I see that they have good teachers and system to manage discipline.  Most kids are well behaved except some problem kids who need special handling.

You can take a look at this link for IS in HK:

What is wrong with being supportive of their children's schools? I do not see how "being supportive parents" can be in the picture of the subject discussion.
Of course a parent would be and should be supportive of the school. If a parent does not like the school, I am sure she would pull her kid out of the school soon. Do not forget that international school education is not free government subsidised education. We would not be forced to accept a school place. We need to go through the trouble submitting the application and we have to pay. If I do not like the school, I will find another school for my children. So all parents should logically be supportive parents.
When I read your other comments of ESF, they are hardly fair at all. I am sure there are individual students that are headache of a school. But I think all schools have a few kids that have behaviour problems and that should hardly be considered "common" within a school.
You have very limited knowledge of ESF schools. How many ESF kids have you taught or met so far all these years? 10? 30? 50? or 100? Do you know how many students there are just within SJS and STC? How fair is your comments if your "sample" is so small to be considered scientifically valid?
My kids are in RCHK. We are not exactly a traditional ESF school but we are a sister school and so we have joint events every now and then. I also have friends in different ESF schools. May be you are unlucky or may be I am lucky. My experience with ESF kids is just brilliant. ESF kids are cheerful and are not shy. But they are also well behaved and helpful. They play hard and yet they know when to behave. There are occasions where a certain kid might got carried away and do silly things. But kids are kids. I am totally happy with kids still having a kid's mind.
I do not doubt your words. I am sure you must have seen some of the worst behaved kids. You are really unlucky. That is probably it.
My final words? Hope you have better luck next time. Hope more brilliant kids are coming to your piano lessons.

Almom,

Please hold your firing.

When I said there are "supportive ESF" parents, did I say it's wrong? I am replying to the OP and indicating that she will see ESF supportive parents with a different opinion, obviously as you said, otherwise why would your kid be still in there? You must be happy with it.

I don't understand why non-ESF supportive parents can't speak in Baby Kingdom.

And as a piano teacher, my life is not restricted to piano teaching, please bear in mind a person has many sources of information, and many ways of observations, experience, and methods of forming an opinion about something.

I don't write my life in here, neither should anyone else, so stop jumping at other's throats and stop jumping to conclusions about other people's lives.

We are here just to share information and ask for information, if you don't like it, don't accept the info provided here, we are all free to provide info for others who want to read it.

Geez.

BTW, I know many ESF kids that are brilliant, well behaved, and with alot of success in academic, athletic, and music aspects..... but in my opinion, it is the result of supplementary support from outside lessons, and parents' constant educated guidance.

My ESF kids are good kids, from good families, but without a doubt, when compared to other students of other IS, and local schools, their "endurance" and "patience" is less.

Almom,

Re-read your post, so if I can't speak about ESF kids because I haven't taught thousands kids from ESF, but because your kids are in ESF, and hence you know much more?

Surely, you know all the kids and all the teachers from ESF then ?

My friend is right, this forum is becoming hopeless with parents that go overkill to anyone who disagrees and parents with total double standards, you can speak what you want, but others cannot.

Good luck, again, with your search for pupil. A good and qualified teacher like you certainly deserve to have better pupils.

No, I didn't criticize anyone personally, and I certainly didn't talk about you.

The VP (the Principal is new so no comments on him yet) and teachers I met in my daughter's school are very good and caring.  So I would say it has to be team work to have good students.

If you are talking about endurance and patience, I can understand in a way, but your previous reply was comparing  'discipline'.  But having said that, children today, regardless which school, are lacking of patience and endurance in general.

But shall we leave this thread alone so that Carolina can get the relative info. that she is waiting for?
