Blythemia,

bebeyan,

"The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than one to two hours of quality TV and videos a day for older children and no screen time for children under the age of 2.

I never wanted to let my child watch TV but when I was at work, my mother-in-law would let my daughter watch Sesame Street (my daughter told me and she was 18 months then).  Then my husband bought some DVDs of Baby Einstein and I ended up letting my daughter watch them before they "expire" (they're for 0-3 yr olds).  Honestly, I regret about what I did because ever since she started watching TV (even Baby Einstein), she seemed to be addicted to it.  She would ask to watch TV first thing in the morning when she woke up.  And then when she wasn't doing anything, she would ask for it.  And when I came home from work, she would run to me and tell me which DVD she wanted to see.  Before we introduced TV to her life, she would sit with me and read books.  Now even when she reads, she quits after flipping a few pages.

Sandrine,

i think your child 's case is so common & troublesome.  Do you have any ideas how to improve and slove the problems ?

babeyan,

I agree that educational TV programs have their values.  People do learn a lot from TV but they learn a lot from books too. E.g., my daughter learnt animal names, shapes and colours from Baby Einstein DVDs but she has also learnt those in books before she watched the DVDs.  If watching TV would cause attention deficiency, I believe reading is a better choice.  So for small children, I still believe the less TV watching, the better because limiting TV viewing time can be a continuous battle between parents and children and a difficult one too.

In my daughter's case, there's very little I can do about my mother-in-law as she stays home with my daughter during the day.  We told our maid not to let my daughter watch TV.  So other than my mother-in-law's TV time, my child would watch TV when she gets up, for half an hour or so.  On weekdays, I asked my maid to try reading or doing collage with her.  She also takes her to the playground on non-playgroup days.  At weekends, I'd take my daughter out, read and play with her to keep her busy, hoping that it would take her mind off the TV.
