Any one give up the interview for DGJS?

After discussion with my friends and relatives, I finally make the decision of giving up the interview for the school.
It is hard to make the decision, but I think the chance is too small for my girl - too shy, no religion, young kid (born in December).

Though I get the interview letter (end of October), I really think I may not let my kid to study even if she succeed - the cost is high, the school will try to group the smart girls in one class (I heard from some friends today).

Can any of the BK mothers give me some advise? Thanks!

Re: Any one give up the interview for DGJS?

For me, I will try. Even you feel it is no chance, but why you don't let her to try?
Give her a chance to stay with stranger, it is a part of her experience.

Be honest, this may not be a bad decision.

JCYL:
I have the same thinking as you do last year.  However, when you look back later and compare DGJS's interview with other schools arrangement.  Your kid really have not much to learn in DGJS's interview as compare with other schools' interview.

What I mean is that unless you are definitely sure you and your kid is suitable for this school, please go ahead.  Otherwise, it's a waste of time.  In terms of experience, no value added to your kid.

Re: Any one give up the interview for DGJS?

Dear Cooyee

NEVER GIVE UP.  LET YOUR daugher try.  DON'T  spoil her road, she's shy, no religion etc.  means what?  Is it mean that she cannot be interviewed by other schools.  Why just not for DGJS.  If too shy, then DO NOT let her be interviewed by ALL schools.  BELEIVE yourself and your daughter, JUST GO AHEAD.  You should know, kids may have good results during the interview when their parents are not with them.

One more thing is that you should notice: before you got the application form, you shouldt know their school fee.  You say high, why you get the form?  Unless you really cannot afford, otherwise go for the interview.

<<the school will try to group the smart girls in one class (I heard from some friends today).>> which friends you heard from, DGJS's parents? For Pr. 1, no grouping in DGJS.  Can you dare say that in other schools there is no grouping in the upper classes?

The chance of 'Mark Six' is also small, but why are so many people buy it.

Don't think too much.  JUST LET YOUR DAUGHTER TRY. Equip well for the interview.   If not try, the chance is ZERO, if you try, the chance is MORE THAN ZERO.  Get this exprience.
Hope to hear your good result.

Re: Any one give up the interview for DGJS?

I think <<the school will try to group the smart girls in one class >> should not be a concern. But my concern is rather  ----  "All DGS girls are equal, but some are more equal than the others".

When I noted that the grand daughter of Mr Tung is in P.1  of DGJS this year and was appointed to be the class monitress on the first day of school;  when I browse the website of the school and found the English composition of a P.1 students writing "My Brother" with English that even some Secondary students are unable to write, I believe; when I met XX celebrity when I submit the form and heard that YY movie star's daughter is also applying this year......I worried how my "ordinary" daughter without connection nor religion background, can survive in such a school even she is one of the lucky ones who, without connection of any kind, can be admitted.

mrs_tom:

Definitely, DGJS is a dream school of a lot of parents, they should have considered what you have mentioned.  They understand it and prepared to play the game for six and even more number of years.

As I said earlier, "Unless you are definitely sure you and your kid is suitable for this school, please go ahead and apply and attend the interview."   Otherwise, it's a waste of time.  In terms of interview experience, no value added to your kid.

係呀,據聞校長在開學日親自入班房同"亞懵"個孫女打招呼添,一般平常人家入得呢D學校都要預左,有時真係幾無癮!

Re: Any one give up the interview for DGJS?

Cooyee,
Agreed with Thinker that "Unless you believe the school is suitable for your child, then go ahead and attend the interview." DGJS is one of the top schools and dream schools of many parents.  You have already read a lot of comments about it and should be able to decide.

We cannot deny that the school "produces" a lot of outstanding students, both in terms of academic results and music and sports achievement.  But we should also accept that not all children can excel in the same school.  My niece completed primary but dropped out in early secondary some years ago because of the pressure and not being able to catch up.  She had grade 8 piano at 13 but that didn't make her special.  It was the norm in her school.  Her parents are professional and quite well off too, so are her classmates' parents.  She got classmates who did very well but it just didn't work out for her.

Thinker,

1. Why DGJS interview does not offer much to learn when compared with other schools' interviews?

2. Which school(s)'  interview(s) offer better learning experience ?

thank you !

Re: Any one give up the interview for DGJS?

You have discussed with your friends and relatives. Have you discussed with your daughter? She is big enough to make the decision for her own life. If she decides to give up the interview, will you feel disappointed?

If you will also feel disappointed, why don't you try first? At least, you have a new item to talk with your child. At least, you have showed your respect to your child. At least, you haven't waste your time to get the form and fill it in. At least, you can take a walk in the nearby region after the interview. At least, you and your daughter have a chance to visit the campus...... See, there are so many advantages.

Re: Any one give up the interview for DGJS?

Re: Any one give up the interview for DGJS?

Dear all parents,

Thanks for all your reply and support.
There are really pros and cons for whether giving up the interview. Like Expose, I am also a working mother, so I understand the difficulties a working mother has to face for a kid entering such an elite school.

I really do not know whether DGJS would be suitable for my girl, anyway, the chance to get in is very low.

Re: Any one give up the interview for DGJS?

Expose,

I agreed with you.

lamba,

Having a second thought, I really have "no more air" to tell.  I fully understand that this is most parents dream and hope, I don't wanted to spoil them.

Other schools' interviews involved playing team games, drawings, testing of language skills (English and/or Chinese), IQ questions which require some thinking or even paper examinations etc.
