My friend's daughter enter Maryknoll by 2nd round lucky draw.
She got only 15marks and not the same district.
She is one of the eight lucky girl.
May be u can try.

My son got only 15 marks also & not living in the same district, but I want to choose La Salle as well. If fail, will take pirvate school. What is your opinon?

Maryknoll係一間好出名既學校, 我想請問下你地,知唔知間學校既程度是否比一般學校高啲? 小朋友讀呢間學校,辛唔辛苦? 需唔需要請補習呢?

如果小朋友能夠o係一間普通學校(但校風好),係叻既學生, 但去到名校變成一個普通的學生, 咁樣,會唔會另佢地減低讀書的興趣呢?
希望你地有經驗的媽咪, 可以解答到我啲問題, 因為我也正考慮好唔好幫個女報呢間學校.

If the two scenarios are:
1. Average school, top student
2. Top school, average student

I will definitely go for the top school.  A famous school offers more than a name, but also the environment and good tradition.  And the pride that comes with it can empower the student to do better.

The student may find it difficult to adapt if he or she transfers into a "top" school, but if he or she can manage the transition, and can at least be an average student in the new school, there shouldn't be any problem.  Of course, there's no guarantee that the student can make it, so there's always some risk involved.

Regarding Maryknoll:  Yes, it is more difficult than the "ordinary" schools out there.

When you say 15 points, do you disregard the 10 points given to all kids of the right age?

In other words, do the 15 points consist of something like

10 points for the parent being a graduate of the school

5 points for being of the same religion?

If so, then my understanding is that it should be quite easy to get in. First, not too many graduates have kids of the right age to go to primary 1. Second, a lot of graduates of traditional prestigious schools would rather NOT send their kids to their old school nowadays.

I totally agreed with you. My daughter was very outstanding in kindergarten but has turned into an average student in Primary. She even lost her self-confidence during P3/P4. Now when our friends praise her a smart girl, she would describe herself a stupid one.

Let's work out the 15 points:

Old boy/old girl - 10 points

Catholic - 5 points.

I heard that there are not too many applicants with 15 points (old boys/girls of LSC/MCS all tend to receive more "westernised" education and I know a lot of La Sallians or Maryknollers who would definitely NOT send their kids back to LSC/MCS but send them to International School instead). To get more than 15 points you need to get 20 points in one of the categories by (say) working in that school, or by having a sibling in the associated secondary school.

If it is said that 15 points sure cannot get in, is there some misunderstanding as to how the 15 points are calculated?

Yes I know.  That's why I want to clarify the basis of calculating the 15 points.  My normal way to calculate the points is to DISREGARD the points given a child of the right age - since almost all kids are of the right age and they cancel each other out.

If we disregard the points given to a kid of the right age, then we have 10 points for old boy/old girl, and 5 points for being Catholic.

If a parent is an old boy/old girl, you can claim the 10 points for being an alumni and you can no longer claim the 5 points for being the first born.  In other words, you can only claim the 10 points for old boy/girl OR the 5 points for being first born, but not both.

That's why I say that it is difficult to see why it still be difficult to get in with 15 points.

If the 15 points are calculated on the basis of 10 (right age) plus 5 (first born) then I agree that it would be very difficult.

我覺得只有適齡 (10分) 加大仔或女 (5分)無可能入到。仲要誇區入，簡直 unbelievable.，最好在此校就讀的學生家長verify 一下。 Thanks!

個15分係要計架.第一,基本上唔會有唔適齡既學生申請入學,所以每人都已經有5分.第二,如申請人有兄姊係同一學校就讀,學校必須取錄,即係話,第二三名子女只要申請同兄姊同校就一定收,咁淨番落黎個d咪又係首名子女,所以呢10分又係十個有九個都有既分數.換句話來講,有呢15分根本冇幫助.

I still think that we need to ascertain how the "15 points" are calculated.

We disregard the points given for a kid of the right age.  (because all kids are of the right age).

We disregard those kids with siblings in the same primary school (because they will not compete with other "point holders).

This leaves points for things like first born (5), old boy/old girl (10) (but of these two, you can only choose one: so if mom and dad is an old boy/old girl you will obviously choose to get the 10 points, and not the 5 points for first born). Catholic (5).

If someone can get 15 points (say, old boy/girl plus Catholic) I would think it is quite safe.
