Would you tell me about KJS?

Dear vcmum,

I think you are aware that ESF runs several schools in Hong Kong. KJS is a primary school and I don't believe ( and did not see when my son was there ) drugs is a problem that exists.

For ESF secondary schools, I do hear some news about students' discipline problems. However, my son is in KGV and I don't see any serious behaviour problems among students in this school ( some senior form students do dye/jel their hair though ). The most serious problem the school may need to deal with may be about theft. For I work in a Band 1 school in HK, I can tell you that it happens commonly in all schools in HK ( a bit scary, right? ). The most effective way to avoid it is to teach our children to take care of their property. In KGV, they promised to intall surveillance cameras and better quality lockers for students. Anyway, I doubt very much theft would happen in primary schools.

Yes, teachers only correct serious/obvious grammatical mistakes in schools. But I don't think we should use the HK typical school approach to judge ESF schools. They are completely different in syllabus, teaching mode and management. Yet, I never worried about it for I they are very good at cultivating students learning awareness and self-learning atteitude. Of course, parents' encouragement and support at home double the effectiveness of their teaching at school. My son's performance in class is never the best, but I am pleased to see that he loves reading and exploring new knowledge on his own. He is only 13 but is going to Year 9 in September. He knows the Maths a HK F.2 student knows and is richer in knowledge of different aspects if compared to an average F.2 student in my school.

The ESF is proposing the IB Diploma course instead of the GCE in secondary schools. It was said that KGV will entering the programme before 2010. I think you can learn much more about this programme on the Internet. For the GCE performance, I think you can check that out from their website.

My son's Chinese is never good. When he was in KJS, Mandarin ( Putonghua ) was not introduced as a second language learning until he was in P.4. And they are learning simplified, not traditional Chinese characters. So, what I did before that was to ask my mom to teach him at home. Yet the environment at school did not encourage him to develop the language. Thus, he speaks English to his friends, speaks to my parents in fluent Cantonese, and for his writing and reading ( simplified ) and speaking ( Mandarin ), I would say he is about P.4 level now.

In case you are not aware, there was a big change in management level in ESF a few months ago. Much detail was reported in the news. Many principals and teachers in ESF schools are leaving in September. Mr Davis ( the principal of KJS ) and Mr Cocks ( the principal of KGV ) are both leaving ( one retired, another going to Shanghai for good ) too. I would say the turnover of teachers is rather big every school year. You may take this under consideration too.

I hope my information is of assistance.

Keane
