Even piano is not easy to get distinction, too! I think students who are weak in scales just because they are lack of practice. For aural, they are a bit weak compared to the keyboard candidates because they cannot hear the harmony. However, practice makes perfect!
I taught a 11yr-old boy (Gr.8 violin) aural intensively in this August and September (16 lessons, 1hr each). He scored 17/18. He is not easy to teach because he didn't take gr.6 & 7 violin exam. Also, he had no idea of chords, cadences, modulations and describing musical features.
Many parents are not willing to spend extra money for aural trainning and find a good accompanist for an instrumental player. Very often, they spend only 4-5 lessons for aural. I think it is not enough. In my opinion, aural trainning is not only for the exam, is about the general musicianship. |
