音樂國際學校 vs 遁道小學(加土居道), 請分享下你們的心得

家長們, please give me some opinion. I live in Yau Ma Tei. My daughter is admitted for both schools.

音樂國際學校 (ICQM):
1. new private school tuition fee $3900 p.m.
2. whole day, new school campus with good hardware support
3. in Diamond Hill, far away from my home
4. teachers are with good qualification and with billion tons of love.
5. the principal is very good and full of sense of humour
6. using music as one of the teaching medium to incease the student's learning ability and increase. Moreover it is good for EQ dev.
7. Active teaching mode. Very little homework for p1-p3 and no dictation for p1.
8. English & Maths are teached in English
9. Strong religious atmosphere - Christian (we are a christian family)
10. with secondary school (train-thru)

As I have a litter son who will study in the same school two years later. If I choose this school, I have no spare money for them for other after school activities. And I have little chance to be a full time mother.

遁道小學(加土居道):

1. old sudsidiary school and no tuition fee
2. half day (a.m for my daughter), very old and small school campus with poor hardware support
3. very close to my home
4. most teachers are with >10 years experience. But still taking the lang exam.
5. new principal will come in Sept 04. But not sure who yet.
6. Traditional teaching mode. Dictation twice per week. Homework at home. 4 tests 2 exams per year.
7. only English is teached in English
8. Good religious atmosphere
9. with secondary school (train-thru)
10. Most of the comments of this school are good.
11. Good academic result

If I choose this school for my daughter, I can have more money and my kids can have more time to join after school activities e.g. swimming class, English class, Ku Fu, drawing. And I can be a full time mother if necessary.

What's your comment? Especially, I do not know much about 遁道小學(加土居道). However, both my husband and myself like ICQM very much as we attended their school talks before. However, financial burden is one of our worry.

It's a very difficult time to make a suitable decision for our kids. Your analysis is quite included most fields so I am not talking about any of them.

What is your goal?
Do you love your kids rather than your job?
How's the security of your  job?
Do you have financial problem rightnow or in the futher?
Image your kids were growing in both of environments and what were the results after six years...
Did you communicate with your kid in such question?
Did you hear what did your kid talk about those schools?
Did you bring your kid to those Primary Schools?

At last, you are the one who can make this decision. Good Luck!

1.近屋企,打風落雨唔洗煩!又唔洗早早就要出門!係個區呢間小學真係唔錯!
2.佢有中學,間中學都唔錯,派位又唔錯!
3.唔洗錢!所為世事料,唔好比咁大壓力自已!將D學費用黎每年去下旅行,參加小朋友鍾意玩D興趣班咪重好!

Thank KKParent. Not much people knowing these two schools. So I seldom got feedback.
I know its my husband and my decision. But I am struggling now.

What is your goal?
=> My goal can be seen on my comments towards the schools.

Do you love your kids rather than your job?
=> I enjoy working but I love my kids much more.

How's the security of your job?
=> Low security. I am working in a big firm who already layoff staff because of earning less.

Do you have financial problem rightnow or in the futher?
=> I don't have financial problem rightnow but not sure in the future as my job has low security. That is the reason why most of my friends suggest me to chose 遁道小學. They said I can change school later if I don't like 遁道小學. However, I don't want to change school kids if there are no big problem. I rather to make the best choose in the first beginning. Actually, I'm not quite understand the school teaching method, moral, teacher's character, school direction of 遁道小學.

Image your kids were growing in both of environments and what were the results after six years...
=> Can't be image. As ICQM is new school and 遁道小學(加土居道) is a traditional school which is demanding on homework, dictation, test and exam.

Did you communicate with your kid in such question?
=> I talked to my daugher, she loves both school as 遁道小學 is half day, ICQM has no dictation. Actually, she does not care too much. She always trust my decision. But my daughter, of course, would like me to stay home as a full time mother. However, my husband suggests "Quality Time" is more important. Being full time mother is not a easy job and sometime will cause negative effect.

Did you hear what did your kid talk about those schools?
=> See answer above.

Did you bring your kid to those Primary Schools?
=> I brough my kids to ICQM, they like it as it is very new and big. I'll bring my daugher to 遁道小學 in early July (school registration day).

Yes, it is a difficult moment for me and as for some other parents also. I just want to share my feeling in BB kingdom.

Well, try to answer these questions again...

1) Did you talk with some parents whose kids are studying in those school? What are their comment on those schools?
2) Did you talk with their Principles or teachers? Can they provide any scholarship for those pupils who are CLEVER or POOR? [sorry to use such terms here]
3) Did you have Savings in BANK? How long it can last when you are unemploy?

遁道小學:
a) You no need to worry about MONEY in these six years and follow six years in her secondary school.
b) You do not know much about their moral, who is the next Principle and their futher.
音樂國際學校:
a) Same religious as yours.
b) Small class, has her secondary.
c) Can grow under muscial environment
d) MONEY. 6 yrs x 10 x 3300 + 6 yrs x 10 x 660 just for Primary Section. AND the other 6 years secondary....
e) Why do not you go to their Primary One Pupils' Parents Meeting Tonight? Talk with others' Parents and Principle.

=> Comments are good but very general. And I find that most school's parents have good comments on his/her kids school.

=> No, I didn't talk to ICQM principle about this issue as I believe the school has also her own financial burden. And the tuition fee is actually not too much (since its including music instructment tutoring). And I don't expect my kids will have any scolarship.

=> As long as my husband has his job then we are marginally ok. But we need to change our living mode e.g. see gov doctor instead of private one. No more oversee trip. Dinner outside in Carol d'cafe....

遁道小學:

If you are going and if you are willing, pls tell the principle that some parents have comment that - the Putonghua and English class is not enough. For example, my kids are studying in a English Kindy, even for my small boy who is 4 yrs old. He can speak fluld Eng. Thus, the primary should increase their Eng and Mardarin level by providing more classes and increase their speaking chance.
And their sport activities seems to be not enough neither.

Do you agree?

I think I know you as I read some of your sharing before.

I always check the messages in BB kingdom but seldom reply as I don't know how to type chinese.

About ICQM, sport activities are relatively limited. I don't think it is because of less pupil. Just because of the school activities arrangement. As they have music class every school day and they finsih school by 3:45. It's not easy to arrange another timeslot for sport. However, sport is same important as art/music. Imaging, the sweating kids with a big small on his/her face. I think they will be dead tried after playing an hour sport - but his / her heart is full of satisfaction.

Anyway, thanks in advance for your best try to night. Let me know if there are any feedback from the principle, teachers or parents.

p.s. I always keep a balance sheet.

If I were you, I will consider whether my daughter has any talent in music. If not very sure, I will choose 遁道小學 and then let the daughter to attend the music in other place. Because for those people who have no talent in music and they have to be forced to do so. It is not good at all. Besides, as I know, the teaching method and the syllabus are not well established in 音樂國際學校, although the vision and mission is excellent. Why don't you wait and see for a few years? If your daughter is keen on music, it is not too late to study at 音樂國際學校 for secondary school.

坦白說,如經濟許可的話,音小是不錯的選擇。其實以一個小孩計,因政府只提供九年免費教育,而且如果原本你也打算為孩子報讀樂器的話,那麼學費相差便不是那麽大了,因音小收取660per month其實是真的很便宜呢。

音小一條龍直升預科,自比一般官津校有多少優勢,也不需催谷小三、小六及初中評核試,對幼兒發展當然更好。

我覺得你的問題其實是經濟抉擇,不是學校抉擇,因為如果學費一樣的話, 選擇必然是音小。不去旅行也沒甚麽大不了。

I had the same doubt as you before I attend the school seminar. I don't think my kids have any music talent and my husband and myself know nothing about music. So I asked the same question to the principal - Mr.Chan. I am very satisfy his reply.

That's what I get from his answer:

- yes, not all kid have music talent
- but nearly every kid like music, just like every yeung gang likes pop songs \ pop music. Doesn't matter he / she is good at singing at all.
- music has different form, not only playing music instructment. Kids can learn music appreciation, wirting songs, singing, ...
- music can help the kid to develop a good character
- music can release presure
- the school is not aiming to train every kids to become musican, but to let them have a chance to go into the music world - another kind of language that can speak deep into our heart. And currently, in HK, there is no other place can provide such a complete learning environment
- lastly, music can increase one's ability on learning.

Don't you think its impressing IF it is true!

I have heard their standard answer for many times already. It depends what value you are having. If you really want your children to like music, there are many ways. Attending 音樂國際學校 is one of the ways. You have to consider the characters of both your children and you. Besides, money is another consideration. I admit that 音樂國際學校 has a good mission. I like music and am a Christain as well. I also like 音樂國際學校 but I also consider that mission and vision are sometimes statements. Whether the school has the methods and techniques to work out, it is another issue. If you really choose 音樂國際學校, you have to prepare for the uncertainties and they are sometimes unexpected. I think that 音樂國際學校 will be a good school but I need to look at the "producti" first. I am a bit conservative in this aspect. Ha! Ha!

Dear DLi,
My son will study in ICQM in coming September.  We are not Christians and I don't think my son will be a genius in Music.  I notice that my son will be one of the guinea pigs as the school is brand new.  The headmaster is full of enthusiam, but most of teachers are young.   

I agree if you just want your baby to like music, there is other alternative way than entering this school.  If you just want your baby to have better academic result, this school may not be the best choice, too.

I choose this school because the mission and learning atmosphere is promising and I just want my kid to be a good guy.   I face the same dilemma as you do.  It is my hope to quit from my job and stay at home to take care of my baby, but the reality does not allow.  Sometime,  I am afraid of making the wrong choice which will influence greatly my kid's future.  

Nevertheless, if your financial situation is really unstable,遁道小學 is still a good choice.

Have you notice any fee you have to pay other than the school fee?
We cannot always put the kid's need in front of ours. The sense of financial security of parent is also very important. Besides, actually what happens in schools is very difficult to predict and there is no guaratee result.

KK parents:

I face the same difficulty when asking parents about their schools. Can you be so kind to share with us

This is my pleasure to share my experience with all of you. I seldom ask those parents about their schools directly.
For example;
1. How good of your school?
2. How good of the principle / teachers ?
3. Do you think the homework is too heavy or difficult? ...etc.
Try these ways;
(a) How many homework per week?
(b) May I borrow your kid's excersie book / text books? (If they are my friends)
(c) What is the Time-table weekly?
(d) Do you have chance to talk with their class-teacher?
etc...

It is so good to have someone to share.

Again, it is a very difficult time to most of the K3 parents. We love our kids and we want to give them the best. We've suffered from HK's education before (at least I am, I don't have a happy school life especially in primary. I dared not to ask question and no teacher notice me at all. Although I had good academic result, I was so quiet as what we were requested!) And that is why I don't like traditional school. And most of my friends had the same comment (nearly 90%!)

I've spent a lot of time and money for my kids kindy and extra curriculum. They have good language fundation and they enjoy their school life also. That why I tried very hard to look for a "new" primary school. ICQM is the dream school for me. I don't mind being the ginea pig. However, the school is far from home and the committment on 12 years study for 2 kids is quite heavy.

Today, my elder daughter is sick. My maid needs to accompany my son to swimming class. Then I have to ask my mum to come and help.

She told me to save the money as to be a full time mother in coming future. As the kids need to me to raise up. Relying on helper is not too good. And the kids will miss the most important time - see the mum right after school....

So I am still struggling. I will pray and wait.

It is true we cannot rely solely on helper.  I really to bring up my child as a full time mother especially in his early years.  Just like what you do, I send my son to a kindergarten that help him to build up a good language foundation.  I am afraid that teachers in traditional school will be too busy in taking care of nearly 40 pupils in a class, lots of adminstration work and frequent change Education Policy etc.

ICQM都是我的理想學校!但經濟狀況又是一大憂慮, 有時突發奇想, 不如孤注一擲, 就讓孩子讀這校, 將來若真有經濟因難, 可以:
1. 弟弟讀免費學校
2. 兩兄弟讀免費學校, 如果ICQM的教學方法有效的話, 轉讀其他學校應該可以適應和克服
3. 申請學校的助學金
今天可以選擇讀ICQM是上帝給我的福啊!何不快樂享受?起碼孩子可享有一段快樂的學校生活.以上只是我個人的想法, 還要等明年選校時才知道自己有否這福呢!
