Re: 18months bb-Not much talking

My son is now being taken care by my mother.  My parents and brothers talk to him much but he still say not much words.  His reaction and listeing are ok too.  We hear he says more words sometimes, as he likes.

I think we can just keep talking to them.  One day, they'll suddenly talk much.  My friend's son suddenly  say long sentence when he was 2 yrs old.  He also talked less before 2.

I've heard that 2 yrs old is a warning age that if children still can't talk much.

Not worry too much at this stage and keep talking to your daughter.

Re: 18months bb-Not much talking

Hi beautiful,

GiGIMUM

Actually, when my daughter 18 months went to health centre, the nurse said if she can say 5 words and tones-that is ok.

I will send my daughter to study nursey  in 2yrs old. I hope she can talk much after she go to school .

Re: 18months bb-Not much talking

beautiful,

How about if i've just heard my son said the words once?  (I don't know if he says again but we can't here.)

5 tones?  Is that mean 5 different tones/sound, maybe like words but not clear.

Thanks!

Totally agree!  Age of 2 is a critical point to determine whether the child has speech delay or not.  It is difficult to make such assessment earlier than that.  However, it is also not too wise to wait for too long like 3 or 4 years old before intervening because the child will have wasted so much time before getting the help that he/she needs.

Intensive home training can produce significant improvement and is the most important factor in training the child.  E.g. talking to the child more in short sentences, slowly, be a reporter and always describe what we &/or the child are/is doing, make the child make more verbal request (induce the child to ask for water/food/toy before offering the same).

For our case, our girl's vocabulary has expanded dramatically and she can speak some simple short sentencens now just after a couple of months' intensive home training.

Re: 18months bb-Not much talking

Read story books with them each day &/ night, make it interesting.  Teach them every single thing or object around you.  Be clear, simple and use short sentence at the beginning.

Take them out to play as much as possible on holidays, to supermarket, park, etc.  Point to any single thing and tell them what's that.  Be loud and clear.  Don't force them to repeat what you said.  Don't test them.  Some children don't like testing.  They'll learn and absorb and then they'll speak it out one day.

Don't watch too much TV, limited to 2 hrs totally in one day (included the time you watch with them).  Instead, you can let them listen to CD, songs, etc. in the daytime.  It's very important to develop their listening skill in order to learn speaking.

When watching TV program, not those learning VCD or DVD, tell them what's on the TV/ advertisement, eg. baby, dog, cat, bird, aeroplane, flower, the numbers ......  You've to be fast, because the screen change every second.  When you feel tired, keep silent for a while.  Babies like watching TV advertisement a lot   .  Again, no need to test them.

Re: 18months bb-Not much talking

charlene,

Thx!!  We should do more and 'deeper'.

How about children songs VCD?  Is it helpful?  Or we (parents / caregiver) should read to them?

Re: 18months bb-Not much talking

maria_lai ,
Children songs VCD may be helpful but not too much, just once a day.

As mentioned before, the total watching time of TV should not be more than 2 hours per day (told by recent research), no matter it's the educational VCD or selected TV program.

You can let your caretaker to give the children's VCD in the daytime.  The sound should just be loud enough for them to hear.  In the middle of the show time, if your baby want to walk around or play but don't want to sit down to see, just let them be.  But don't turn it off until the VCD is really finished.  It's also a chance for them to listen.  They'll absorb it.  Don't ask your caretaker (maid or grandparent) to repeat what is shown on the TV as their pronunciation may not be good enough. I suppose you get some good quality educational VCD, not necessarily the expensive one, no matter English or Cantonese.  (good quality - If it's teaching English, all in English. If it's teaching Cantonese, all in Cantonese.  Don't use those speaking Cantonese to teach English.)

Instead, your caretaker can talk to your baby more in the day time, no matter it's English or Cantonese.
If she a maid, ask her to speak in English (not Cantonese).  If s/he is a grandparent, ask them to speak in Cantonese (not English).

In night time, you read the story book with your child.  Don't depends on your caretaker to do this.
Of course, if you're free in day time, you can do so as well.
