Re: ST Paul's convent or St mary
I've actually studied in both St. MAry's and St. PAul's COnvent . I'm sure there've been a lot of changes all through these years but assuming that their education philosophy didn't change much , perhaps I can share my personal experience with these 2 schools to give you a broad overview???
SMCC is really very strict -- if you didn't get good grades, its difficult to get in the secondary section and needless to say -- Form 6&7.
The academic results attained is better in SMCC than SPCS.
The atmosphere in SPCS is much lighter, everyone is always very happy. Of course there are good graders but the level of academic achievement is slightly lower. I'm not sure whether there are any changes now but as far as I remembered, SPCS's doesn't offer any Science subjects in F.6 , there are only 2 ARTS classes.
SMCC is rather old fashioned (sisters or the disciplinary mistresses will ask you to kneel on the platform and measure the length of your skirt --- it shouldn't be shorter than your knee cap the most by 3 inches!!)
SPCS focuses a lot on extra-curricular acheivements, but I guess nowadays SMCC has opened up a lot as they have Sr. Virginia Wong as the headmistress for the Primary Section. Sr. Virgina used to teach me English in the Seconday Section, she's one of the best nuns in SMCC (the best indeed) . A small -bodied sister, she has a very loud, energetic voice.
She has that kind of natural authority that makes you listen to her. She's unlike most nuns at that time -- strict and reserved -- she's cheerful and
very approachable, of course she is also a very bold and determined person . One thing I like her particularly is that she is very willing to help, genuinely. THis is unlike the old old fashioned sisters at that time - (using their authority to scold and punish you as they know they control everything...).
So my choice is :-
SMCC is better than SPCS in terms of academic qualifications but girls from SPCS are more sociable. Girls from SMCC are more shy. It depends on what you want, but of course if you want your daughter to be really happy and more relaxed due to lesser competition and stress, then go for SPCS.
DGS always comes first, as they are less traditional than SMCC. Their teachers mostly graduated from overseas universities who can share with the students their experience in applying for overseas universities. ALso, they stimulated the critical thinking ability of their students which I do believe is a key to effective education.
Maryknoll -- I guess its the Kowloon version of SPCS, But actually all are good schools without too much discrepancies. I'm sure you won't make the wrong choice out of these three if all offered your daughter a space. But my choice in sequence will be:-
1. DGS - major concern : have to pay school fee
2. Maryknoll :- Environment is so much nicer, and the learning atmosphere is less tense.
3. SMCC :- stricter, syllabus more difficult -- they are using P.2 's English for their P.1 students. Also, they need to compete with Holy ANgels for Secondary spaces.
4. SPCS :- nice uniform and in particular the oxford schools...........which you could only buy in Causeway Bay, none in Kowloon side.
Disclaimer:::::
These are my experiences about 15 years ago , there could be tremendous changes that I didn't know of ::::: so don't make me liable for obsolete information ----- my two kids are boys.......that's why I didn't do any updates.....Ha Ha.
