achow,
Would like to share my experience with you, you can try the method like "fill in the blank", split the word according to phonic, leave some blanks (alphabet) in between the word and set around 10 - 12 times for your kid to fill in and play. Actually, every time, they fill in the blank, they have to spell the whole word again. It helps my kid to improve his spelling. Here is the example for your reference.
we*at*her (weather)
w_ath _ _
w_ at _ _ _
_ _ at _ _ _
w _ a _h _ r
_ e _ th _ _
_ e _ t _ er
_ _ _ ther
_ e at h _ _
it's just like a game, and you can teach the kid to find some other vocabulary in the word like "we", "at" , "her" inside weather, which make more fun for the game. But of course, do not practise too many vocabulary each time, hope it also work for your kids!
