Because one of training teacher said the phonics teach the kids use 拼音, but 拼音 not applied to all english words. what do u think ? because i just enrolled the phonics summer course for my kid.

Is this nonsense?

Phonics applies to majority of the words. One only needs to memorize the exceptions.

Exactly. That's why I let my son learn IPA instead.

phonics本身冇問題, 而係phonics係比d 以英文為mother tongue既小朋友學睇書.  因為佢地一開始已經講英文, 對spoken english既字既意思基本上已經識, 只係唔識睇.  所以佢地學phonics幫佢地pronounce個字, 雖然有exception, 但係對native speaker唔係問題, 佢只要拼到7成8成個讀音, 加埋前後理解, 都會讀出個字, 咁佢就會明白個意思.

所以, 如果小朋友自小都用英文為mother tongue, 佢學phonics就好fit.  但如果好似我仔咁係用cantonese做mother tongue, 就未必咁合適喇.

我個仔o係灣仔"悅書虫"學ipa.  幾年前好少地方可以比小朋友學ipa. 而家除左"悅書虫"外, 仲有其他.  bk頂頭個廣告都有.  mongkok"語音學會", 仲有某d地區既小童群益會都有.

PS: IPA = International Phonetic Alphabets 國際音標

Just my personal opinion:

I would let my child develop the very basic reading skills first. When he can read simple sentences with meaning, I will introduce some phonetic concepts while reading. My reasons: 1) learning phonics is not as interesting as learning to read with meaning. 2) it seems difficult to grasp the phonetic concepts until he becomes familiar with the language. 3) If he focuses too much on the pronunciation of individual words, it's no fun to read books.

For me, I used flash cards until he can recognize some words/ phrases. When we go on to reading simple story books, i would introduce some phonetic concepts slowly. (e.g when he's confused with cook, look, toook). Learning IPA is necessary (very important) when the child goes to upper primary.
