I don't consider VSA an international school because it follows local Chinese curriculum, students learn Chinese the same way as  in local schools i.e learn to read and write Chinese the same way as local schools do. I would consider it a mix between international and local schools, because their approaches to teaching other subjects are a lot like international schools.

It's a local, private school with international curriculum.  It stress on Bilingual capability of it's students.  It has lots of NET teachers.

The majority of students are HK local student from non- native English families.

It is clear enough?  It's not an International School.

This is what I consider to be the major difference between VSA and international school. In international schools, the children may be exposed to Chinese language orally with limited reading and writing Chinese training (my understanding only, if I am wrong, please feel free to correct me). But in VSA, the children use the same Chinese text books and exercise books as a lot of other local schools and they are taught to read and write Chinese following similar local Chinese curriculum with dictations, journal writing etc. (this is the main reason why I chose VSA vs international schools for my kid)

The other major difference is most of the students in VSA are local Chinese students wheras the % of local Chinese students are lower in international schools.

It's not easy to get into the school in the second round application this year.  I enrolled my girl and went for interview last Saturday.  And I found out that they have only not more than 20 seats available for the 2nd round enrolment.  However, I think it has at least one hundred applications in this round (it's what I guess only.  Our session got about 30 children I think and it has at least 3 sessions up as far as I know because I see one session before us and one after us).  The competition is really keen and we're still waiting for the result!

hi hellokids,

VSA has 5 classes P1 in 2007/08.  As each class cannot exceed 30 students, the maximum enrollment is 150 students.  Victoria Kins have 142 pupils enter VSA, the remaining seats are 8.

Yau_Cheung,

Thanks for the info.   I don't know if my info is correct but I heard that it has 180 applications in the first round enrolment.  When I saw the Primary School Principal last Saturday, he said it'll have around 10+ places for the 2nd round application.  I asked him how they can manage the over-enrolment in the first round and they said they're looking at the matter now.  Actually, I know that it does have some parents who are not following the rule of the game and applied VSA first round while applying the other DSS/private schools.  I just wonder if VSA will have a system to track all these dishonest parents/applications or else it's really not fair to those who are honest and follow the rule!

hi hellokids,

Is your child studying K3 and applying 2008/09 P1?  5 classes P1 is 2007/08.  I think VSA will have 6 or more classes P1 in 2008/09.  Which kin is your child studying?  Good luck.

hi Share,

The staff of VSA told me that 2007/08 P1 has 29 students each class.  Is your child applying 2008/09 P1?  My son may apply 2009/10 P1.

hi mattsmum,

One of vice principle (Victoria Kin) told me that no interview required for children from Victoria Kin.  She said that VSA must accept the students from Victoria Kin (if parent choose VSA).  Is it true or not?

Hi Yau Cheung,

I asked the Principal already and he said the limit for P1 (2008/09) is still 5 classes.  Also, I can tell you that only those who applies in the first round will be accepted without any interview (it applies to all Victoria Kindergartens).  However, you have to sign an undertaking agreeing that you'll not apply for any other schools (incl the gov't one, the DSS, private school and others)!  My point is, if they set this rule, they should set up a good system to trace if those applying in first round are really following the rules.  However, it seems that they don't have a good system to check against the dishonest cases (it's really not fair to the 2nd round applicants) and I really disappoint with their arrangement.

Hi Yau Cheung,

I really don't know how they can trace the cases since they never disclosed their system!  If anyone knows whether they really have such a system (or an ability) to trace that out, please share!

You know, my most concern is whether they really have places (even 10) available for the 2nd round applicants since their places are actually not enough for handling the first round applications (180 applications vs around 140 places) and they claimed that all those apply in the first round will be automatically accepted.  Actually, I think the school should disclose a bit on how they handle this kind of case.  The principal said they'll try to trace the dishonest cases in the first round but I just wonder if they can find out more than 40 dishonest cases.... .  How if they couldn't meet their target?
