World-class maths achievements
Wednesday, 14 March was 'Pi Day' (3.14) and to celebrate, thousands of schools from over 100 countries worldwide entered the World Maths Day online competition (www.worldmathsday.com). Students aimed to beat the world record of 10 million maths questions correctly answered in a day - they beat it with ease, answering over 38 million computer generated questions online.

Thousands of schools worldwide took part, but the top two schools were both from Hong Kong. The PC Lau Christian Alliance Memorial International School (in Kowloon) came first with 812,000 correct answers and Island School came second (668,000). There were five other Hong Kong schools in the top 50, including Bauhinia School (27th) and Clearwater Bay School (29th). 14 of the world's top 100 students were from Hong Kong, including Rebecca Gilhooly (29th), Min Joon Lee (59th) and Ernest Lo (60th) of Island School, and Ryan Wong (80th) of Clearwater Bay School.

King George V School won the much coveted Warry Trophy for the second year running at this year's South East Asia Mathematics Contest in Singapore. Sha Tin College were second and Island School third: the first time that ESF schools have taken the top three places. Our congratulations to all the students involved, and to the ESF teams' coaches: Paul Jackson (Island School), Teresa Gott (South Island School), Frances Lee and Catherine Buckley (West Island School), Louise Sawyer (King George V School), Helen Adams (Sha Tin College) and Corinna Smith (Renaissance College).

Finally, congratulations to Jake Chan (Year 10) of Sha Tin College for being ESF's first ever prize winner in the annual Australian Maths Competition, which attracted 400,000 entrants worldwide.

Well done!!

Re: Congratulations to the IS of Hong Kong

South Island School, West Island School & Renaissance College have not won any prize, only that some of their teachers are part of the ESF team coaches.
