父母係咪一定要識英文呢?

我想問下讀國際學校父母係咪一定要英文好叻呢? 我想同個囡轉國際學校,但我和老公英文又唔叻, 咁係咪唔駛唸呢?

我地兩公婆真係想比佢讀國際學校, 咁interview係咪都要見埋父母呢? 其實平時我已經有個外藉老師上門同佢補近英文近一年, 但我又唔知國際學校係要求小朋友要點! 有無人有意見.

No.  There are some Korean and Japanese studying in the international schools.  Their English is okay but not so good, but they can still communicate with the class teachers during parent consultation and read the English newsletters.

So relaxed!!  I think it will not be the case that the parents are necessarily good in English when the children is studying in IS

This question appeared, appears, and will appear again and again and again...

The answer depends on what you meant by "一定".
If you focus on the chance of being admitted, then the answer is no; the chance depends heavily on the ability, especially in English, of your child(ren).  However, I believe there is a strong correlation between the child's English skills and the language spoken by the parents in their daily lifes.  

However, after being admitted, you also have to consider the communication between parents and schools, and more importantly, the communication between parents and children. If your children talk to others, except you, in English and their favourite authors are JKRowling, Philip Pullman, Darren Shan, John Grisham, Michael Crichton, Stephen King, Agatha Christie, etc, are you ready for such a cultural impact?

I think, yes, you need to 識英文. But you do not have to be very good at it. You need to know sufficient English to enable you to communicate with the school and teachers.

I do not think you should be too worried. The majority of the ESF parents are in fact Hong Kong Cantonese, and amongst them, many are also not good at English.

In fact, most international schools have even higher tolerence to parents English standards than some local elite schools. Internationl schools have children (and parents) from all nationality. Many Germans and French are not good at English too.
