Take my daughter for example. She is in FS_2.
1. Dictation
She does have dictations in English (weekly) and Chinese (occasionally). To me, dictation is not the most important, though I agree that students should be given dictations from time to time as it is a good way of spelling reinforcement. It is the literacy development, sentence constructions, creative writing, comprehension, speaking, reading etc. that counts.
2. Assessments
The school has continuous assessments in core subjects. The children have classwork assigned by the teachers to finish within the class period. My daughter has weekly assessment in Chinese which I have to spend time at home to review with her. The best practice, like most parents do, is to follow closely on what has been taught and review with her at home. There are 3 assessments for the whole school year.
Apart from the traditional writing assessments, there are project works required from time to time in different subjects. I enjoy the project approach because it arouses my child's interest in learning more through new discoveries.
As I mentioned earlier, the school has expectations towards the students to meet the targets set for each term. So, parents' involvement and support are important in this aspect.
3. For Foundation Stage (first 3 yrs.), all subjects are taught in Cantonese except English and Putonghua.
4. Moral Eduation
Logos Academy is a Christian school and religion is taught as of P1, mostly through Bible story-tellings. Gradually in P2 they give students hand-outs and minimal homework to reinforce their religious concept of Christianity. Apart from religion, the school emphasizes disciplinary education and offers a special lesson once a week to teach the children. The subject emphasizes a strong bondage between the child and the family, friends, love, help and respect for others. In my opinion, this is an excellent arrangement to pair up with the child growth.
4. Leisure
Like other children, my daughter has enough time to do her reading, creative writing, drawing, etc. etc. She also joins a few extra-curricular activities apart from her regular school days. I do expect the workload to be heavier by the time she is in P3 & 4.

Another suggestion w/b to call up the school and find out when they will hold the next parents' meeting for P1 students (normally held in August).
