Jolly phonics.

You can teach you kids by watching the DVD.  The whole set of materials can be purchased in H K Book centre or wise kid.

Re: 市面下哪種Phonics(自己在家教小朋友) 比較好 ??

I did some research for comparing Letterland and Jolly phonics

General opinion

- I don't think phonics can be taught at home unless a parent is a native speaker.  o learn English is relatively easier and phonics is like a refinement course to teach a child to speak with proper style and accent. It defeats the purpose if the teacher does not command the accent.

- Both systems are based on the concept of enabling children to recognize the alphabet by their sounds. Jolly Phonics uses stories and actions to help children remember the shape of the letter and it's sound - for example - a hissing snake for S. With Lettlerland, each letter is given a name - A is Annie Apple and there is an apple entwined in the letter.

- Having used both as an infant teacher there are pluses and minuses to both systems. Jolly Phonics is good for those children who need movement in their learning. For visual learners then Letterland can be helpful, if not a bit twee.  You need to remember that both schemes are only meant for pre-nursery and nursery aged children and as soon as they've got their letter sounds the systems should be abandoned. This is where teaching in the UK got Letterland wrong as they continued using it after the children no longer needed it, thus creating confusion.

Pro for Letterland

- I taught my son, Alex, with letterland before he started school and we both loved it. He learned his letter sounds really well and it was a lot of fun. When he started school he was taught jolly phonics because the teachers said that they had stopped letterland as some 7 year olds were still saying clever cat instead of 'c' and it was confusing them. We didn't find that problem at all with Alex letterland helped him a lot and he understood the sounds well. I don't like Jolly phonics as much as letterland but it didn't really matter because Alex already knew his letters anyway.  As long as your child knows the letter sounds as well as the names of the characters I am sure they will have no problem adapting to phonics in school. Alex now has a younger brother and although I now know that jolly phonics will be taught in school I am still teaching him letterland because we like it and have a lot of fun with it.

- Hi everyone, my daughter starts school in September and we've been advised by the school to start teaching them and familiarizing them with the jolly phonics actions and sounds. My dd just thinks these are silly(Jolly phonics are silly because they have a song and dance like “Ant in the apple A A A”) though and wont take them seriously when I try and do the actions and make the sounds. Does anyone else have this problem and did your children eventually learn to read using this method? I have previously been teaching my daughter phonics with letterland which she loved so I think she’s probably just confused now that Ive changed her. I personally prefer letterland but if the school uses jolly phonics I guess its best I try and teach her that way instead.

Con for Letterland
- Mine have both learnt to read with jolly Phonics...I don't like letterland...that Harry hat man is scary
Jolly Phonics does make sense when you get used to it. Like Andrea says, it's good for the blended sounds rather than just the alphabet.

- Would opt for Jolly Phonics. Lettlerland is being used less in the UK now. Educators have found that it confuses many children having letters with figures attached to them and that they find it hard to recognize the letter without Annie Apple or Robber Red wrapped around it!

- Jolly Phonics Most children are now taught to read using some sort of phonics. Letterland is popular and many school use Jolly Phonics. I like Jolly Phonics as it is a parent and school scheme and I feel that parents like to be involved in helping their child learn. It also means that they can reinforce work done at school which is ideal for children. (It is good point to choose Jolly Phonics if their school choosing Jolly Phonics as the phonic system otherwise Letterland is the only choice to reinforce their child.  As I remember most of the HK school are using Letterland rather than Jolly.  In addition, it is also a good reason to convince them to register although their school is using Letterland[ reinforce work done at school])
