Re: advice offering----ESF employee

Hi, 困惑人,

Do you know how is the conduct of students in ESF secondary schools?  Any smoking or drugs problem?  Which school is the best?

And do you know how are the secondary students in Renaissance College as well?  Are they mostly coming from local schools?  How is their conduct?  How is the study atmosphere there?

Pls advise.

Thank you.

Re: advice offering----ESF employee

There were always a small proportion of rich students with a smoke/ drug problem...however, the staff body does well to control and exert appropriate punishment, in fact there were a few students who were expelled because of that.

However international school are good for children who are self-determined as opposed to the traditional schools because int'l schools will be able to provide a learning atmosphere with freedom in which these self disicplined kids will enjoy. Think about it........there is  no need to add more restraints onto a child who already knows the formula to success

a few of the ESF secondary schools will be changing to IB next year (i.e. the yr12s in sept 2007) meaning that students may be expected to know what they do study in university by the time they pick thier IB subjects.

traditionally it;s been IS>WIS>SIS, but bear in mind that IS will be redeveloping their school premises in the near future (they have 2 plans, one taking 4 yrs and the other 6 yrs to redevelop the campus), you might want to take that in consideration when picking the school your child would end up in.

WIS in general seemed much more organized with the newest facilities around....
Island is traditionally the most rigorous academically,
SIS has a special unit for students with learning disabilities

Re: advice offering----ESF employee

Hi 困惑人,

My son was born in 1995. Studies at a local school P6. We just applied the ESF (South Island School) for 2007 school term. Do you know is it hard to get a place there. Since we belong to the category 3, could you please advice us how do we prepare ourselves to be more competitve? Do they have any prefernce besides of the category? We have not recieve anything from the school yet, but as I know candidate will need to take an entry exam, so do you have any past paper for reference?

Thanks a lot.

Re: advice offering----ESF employee

Oh, it's so great that there is an ESF expert. May I know:

1) which ESF school will change to IB in the coming years? I heard is all schools will change to IB.
2) how many Chinese lessons per week in its primary/secondary schools? Or how many hours/week?
3) Which school is better in terms of student standard/quality: Bradbury School; Glenealy School;Kennedy School.

Thanks very much.

Re: advice offering----ESF employee

The IB performances of SC graduates are extremely outstanding. One girl got full mark. On the other hand, information showed that many IS graduates went to the best universities over the world.

How would you compare SC and IS? Thanks for ideas in advance.

Re: advice offering----ESF employee

They currently have two campuses, one on Perth street (old one) and the one on no. 4, Rose street, opened in 1994. They are trying to redevelop it so that in the future, students can stay in the perth street campus for all their classes. for the meanwhile I think they will move to rose street whilst redev is underway.

I think the mandarin standard will always be a notch below local schools because the curriculum itself is less demanding although teachers are proper mandarin teachers usually from Mainland China

困惑人,

Knowing that KJS is going to relocate to another campus for redevelopment. Do you have any idea where it is ?

Which one is better (KGV vs Shatin College) in term of the academic result and the conduct of the students?

After six years learning of Mandarin in ESF primary ,how is their Mandarin standard as compare  to local schools ?

Thanks !

Re: advice offering----ESF employee

困惑人,

Can I have your comments on RC as well?

I noticed that most Chinese students speak Cantonese after class. This is very very different from other ESF, where even Chinese students speak very good English.

Also, I would like to know whether they have pressure in getting students that they would take students that are less competent?

Re: advice offering----ESF employee

The british education system tries very hard to cater for all students who have the intent on joining thier edu system but they make sure that an effective usage of resources is maintained.......
for your case, your chances would be slim but not without luck.

Unfortunately I do not have any past papers for references....but I would expect them to test your childs skills on english comprehension and the ability to interact and converse with foreigners w/ confidence..... CONFIDENCE is the keyword here as the child will be experiencing a totally new edu system if he is admitted and the school would want to make sure that within his character he has the strength to pull thru.

i'm not clear about SIS as I do not work in this school though so I can only give you a general idea of how ESF pick their students.
SIS has inclusive education though and I really feel that it would benefit in developing your child into becoming a more mature personality.

last but not least, I would want to express that even IF your child misses the chnace to enter SIS in f.1, you can try again for yr 10 entry or yr 12 (i.e. f.6) entry. Yr 12 entries are likely to produce some spaces since some students opt to return to UK for their Alevels

Re: bbchailover

re: bbchailover

Sorry I really don't know anything about ESF kindergarten admissions but I can offer you some opinions on admissions to primary school.
On the website tho it says specifically on the BB's english ability, I guess at the age of 2, the vocab for BBs will still be quite limited but should still be able to demonstrate a curiosity when facing new vocabs.
The rest, I guess is with the interaction of the BB and his peers....i.e. whether the BB actively engages in play, but at K level, BBs should learn by the process of group play rather than a methodological training.
I would imagine them to also be looking for signs of developmental difficulties (but not neccessarily meaning that they will exclude BB if your child has one since education is about personal development)

The admissions to P.1 should be less arbitrary than local schools.
If my memory serves me right, they look for fluency in reading and also child-teacher interaction, bear in mind that children spend a sig. proportion of their day at school.
ESF supposedly picks their student body based on needs and not merit

Re: bakusensei

I'm sure that WIS/SIS/IS are all going to be changing to IB from 2007 sept onwards.

KGV.... not so sure... but should change as well as it would really be odd to have only 1 school left with the UK GCE system.
Shatin's obviously been the pilot school for IB

Re: advice offering----ESF employee

IS has a stronger reputation but SC is chasing up in overall quality I believe......
facility wise i would say that SC has the edge but IS will be redeveloping soon so this advantage wont last long

Since SC is using IB and IS still uses GCE... I cannot comment....
IB provides a more all rounded education but some students opt to head to UK also because of this factor.

Re: advice offering----ESF employee

My son is now studying Primary 2, in a Band 1 local school located in Central/West Dist.  He is on the top 20 among the whole P2 and is always willing to study hard under my supervision.  But, both of us have the pressure already, esp me.  i don't really want to put my son all the way thr' the local education, more freedom/choice/ independent/ space /self-developed ..etc instead.
Could you pls advice me if i can transfer him to IS, when is the best time (P4/P5/P6, will it be too late?) to transfer, which IS in C/W Dist you recommend and what preparation we need to make?

Million thanks!!!!!

In Him

Grace

Re: Chunky

re:chunky
Yes ....because RC puts an emphasis on Chinese language education in addition to the British system that they traditionally offer....i wouldn't be surprise that students use Cantonese after class.

no i dont think they have a pressure for taking in students which are less competent because the selection policy is not based on academic merit but needs.

Re: amy_nf_fung

Re: amy_nf_fung

What are you aiming for then?
would u want your son to enter ESF in the nearest possible future or are you looking for secondary school entry.....?
With a fair comment, would you judge that your son is an unusually bright child? at the stage in primary school...it;s difficult to predict how well his future could be.

Island School is one of the best ESF schools around, as usual there will be tests on English and Maths on entry to ESF schools before yr 10if ur app had been considered. What yo ucan do really is to make sure that your son reads a variety of books to boost his confidence in english... also try to gain access to social scenes where foreigners are common, this should help ease his nerves as well when facing a foreign examiner in his entry interviews

Local edu stifles a childs creativity no matter how hard the reforms try to alleviate this weakness but the rigour of the syllabus also instills a sense of discipline and toughness within these children.
Obviously there are children who benefit all the way within this system but there also those who flail halfway thru.

In your message you weigh freedom/choice/independence strongly and hence i would suggest that you get your child into ESF system BEFORE any public exams are taken, i.e. try to get your son into ESF for yr 10 (GCSE) where he will be able to be exposed to a variety of subjects rather than being streamed into arts/science.

If you cannot get him into ESF by yr 10, try again in yr12  when some students return to UK for their GCE ALs hence creating spaces in the 6th form places.
