Seek for advice - Does Kumon work??

Any experienced parents could advice??
(My son is a bit lazy.)

My son has just started Kumon Maths 2 months ago. He was crying in the first week because he felt too stressful to finish all stuffs within 10 mins.

Now he picks up and can always finish the daily work less than 10 mins. He feels satisfy and I observe he writes faster than before. 揸筆手勢好咗.

老師話佢揸筆太低, 阻住自己看寫咗什麼. 而家改善了.

現在佢學d野都好淺. 話要先打好根基wor. 所以暫時未看到什麼.

my daughter started Kumon math in K1, she is now K3. What I can share is Kumon helps her to concentrate and to keep up her routine and responsibility in finish the homework everyday. Of course, her math is better than the same age kids as her.

I let my son to learn Kumon in K1 summer till he is now in P1. Kumon cannot help him at all in this level. Because started from P1, most of the math was teaching in sentence. He got a lot of mistake with the Math in school.
I just stop Kumon this month.

I think Kumon is good for young kids only. I still let me girl to take Kumon, she is 4 years old. She did quite good and she love to do the exercices every night.

Thanks for your sharing.  I've got more idea now.

My son is 6 years old.  His problem is that he learns fast but he also forget easily.

He can memorise and spell words quickly.  However, if I ask him to spell those words one week later.  He may  forget around 50% of them.  How can I help him?? Does Kumon can enhance him in that area???
Since my wife and I both need to work, I really want to find some method to help him. Thanks a lot.

achow,

I agree that Kumon may be not good enough for primary school student as they don't train problem solving. Did you consider Olypus maths instead?

Hi Didier,

My daughter is F.1 now and when she was small, she studied at Ling Liang Church kindergarten. At that time, she just studied Kumon English and Maths only but no others. She applied 6 primary schools, 5 failed but only SFA offered her a seat. I highly recommend Kumon English and Chinese as well. My daughter studied Kumon Chinese, and her PTH always got 'A' in school.

For Kumon Maths, she dropped in P.2 because 無文字題.

Do you mean my daughter? I forgot as she is F.1 now but my younger daughter is also studying Kumon Maths and English now. She is K3 and she enjoys learning Kumon a lot as there is half hour playgroup every week for kinder.

我識個小朋友k1學公文數至小一學期初, 好叻每日都好快完成d功課, 有小二數學程度, 後來小一要轉讀返珠心算, 因為佢只識計橫式唔識計直式! 以上只係小小分享, 不是惡意批評, 見諒!

I think learning phonics can help.

I let my son to try on Olympic Math in last summer. Myself think it was quite difficult (Myself don't even understand the questions sometimes)

:

I think is good for a student who is in P3 to take Olympic but not younger,I think the sentence is quite tracky.

I am now trying to find a private Math teacher for him and will see how he is doing.

我囝囝學左剛1年(maths),個人覺得幾好.
起碼佢習慣每天做一份練習,唔會偷懶.而且學嘅野巳經深過佢學校教嘅.(kumon學緊兩位加一位數),但學校仲係教緊數數.

I'm also interested to let my son do Kumon Chinese....he's very lazy but he does well in Eng. He attends a local school so Chi is more important. As he's already P5 will it be too late? I learnt Kumon Chi is taught in Putonghua so it may also help his Putonghua. Any advice?? I asked the KUmon school here and the next briefing is only in FEb so I have time to consider. I also heard once you join it will be very long term....can you drop out after a period? Many many thanks!
