Hi all,

While SPCCPS and DBSPD are widely recognized as two different best schools for boys in HK, I want to know exactly how they are compared with each other, such as education quality, education method, homework loading, ECA loading, school environment, social level, parents' background, graduates' prospects, etc. (don't need to discuss school fee). Much thanks.

Apart from the factors that you mentioned before, I think the logistics arrangement has to be considered as well. Is the location of the school too far from school?

SPCCPS emphasizes the nurturing of humble leaders. But DBSPD is different. It presents a more aggressive style. So, the choice largely depends on the expectation of the parents of what they want their child to be.

From the parents briefing in SPCCPS, there is a big renovation in SPCCPS coming. It is more energetic now. Quite different from its previous image.

Frankly, if location is not a problem, then just see if both schools accepted your child and to decide which school is the best to suit your child's character and ability as one is uni-sex and the other is for boys only. We abandoned DBSPD (eventhough we're living in Kln side) and take co-ed instead.

Good luck and make sure to get a right choice before you leap!

Hi! BW Mammy,

Can you share with us why you took Co-edu instead of DBSPD for your son? We also live in Kowloon; my son was accepted by Co-edu, besides took the 2nd interview at DBSPD today

. We want to have a more clear picture on these 2 schools in different aspects metnioned above. Can you share your experience with us? Much thanks.

It all depends on the character of your son. My son with a bit mild character (should study in co-ed and made by his own decision) and strong in music (though I'm too innocent in music). Apart from Aristo Sham (岑靖轁), my son is the second best in piano while both of them were studying in SFA in their P.1-2. I can say that SPCCPS concerns more in musical whilst DBSPD/DGS in athletics. FYI, Aristo interviewed SPCCPS when he was in P.1 promoted to P. 2 but was rejected after 2nd interview in SPCCPS (MR) because of the "background" of their parents. All others from SFA are rejected by both KR & MR in their first interview. The top 10 boys in SFA accepted by DBSPD including my son when they're promoting to P.3 and top 8 boys entered to DBSPD eventually (my son was the only one accepted by SPCCPS (MR) luckily and 1 boy still remains in SFA among the top 12s). I can also tell you that the toppest in DBSPD P. 5 right now are mostly transferred from SFA.

My son got his great academic achievements when he was in P. 2 and that's why I tried to get his first time interview by SPCCPS (MR).

Can't imagine the top 12 students intend to leave the school in SFA. How is the moral in SFA then?

Well, my observation is that DBS has a very strong and all round musical department. Music students will have an excellent time there. I also found the instrument tuition at DBJS and DBSPD more serious and advance than SPCCPS.

However, the study environment is better in SPCC in comparison to DBS - in the secondary school. Will that be your concern ? It is known that about 50% are cream students in DBS with good academic results, the other 50% are strong in sports and music, i.e. but comparatively weak academically.

Dear gogochurch and BWMM,

By summerzing your opinions, it seems that sending kids to SPCCPS is more reliable and safe than DBSPD, at least in the coming years. I believe a good study environment and good relationship between teachers and parents are the two important issues in the primary school education. My son was accepted by SPCCPS and took the 2nd interview at DBSPD this year. What I did feel is that SPCCPS is very "warm and cooperative", but DBSPD tries to stand at a high level in front of you and with less freedom and more traditional. Actually, the 2nd interview let me to feel what I was subject to a judgment. For example, the panel only allowed us to speak 1 minute and stopped you immedately after 1 minute. Also, the 2 questions were so "low level"; they were similar to what your boss suddenly asked you to sit on an interview panel on behalf of him. As you may not know what the objective is, you will typically ask the candidates to introdcue themselves and to ask them why they apply for the post and the company, etc. Together with testing your kid, it just spent 5 minutes in total, .... so crazy interview and I don't think they can really assess the candidates/families. Compared to DBSPD, the interview process of SPCCPS was more comfortable and let us to have a "respectable" feeling even though the waiting time was so long. Anyway, you could talk freely with the principal (Ms Lee) for ~15 minutes (We talked for 25 minutes). So, it is undoubtedly that we will choose SPCCPS.

SPCC really will "selects" parents. That's why their students tends to be humble and with very good characters. But the seats are limited, only those verysmart kids can be accepted.
