It really depends on which primary school u are targeting.  If u only want your kid your kid to get into DBS, then it might be the school.  This kindie take every steps to prepare your boy to get into DBS (of course not everyone can get a place in this kind of elite school) BUT......
to my own opinion (then again, other parents may not agree with me), I don't think this kindie takes great care of the kids, very limited toys in the classroom, kids take care of themselves in the washing room, teachers are parents oriented but not the children (in other words, they care more about the parents' feelings but not the kids')..... anyway you must go to the school and feel it by yourself and talk more to the parents who have kids there.

There's a gossip about HK Preschool (Kln Tong) has a number of boys getting into DBS last year.  The kindie encourge the students to join competitions like drawing, siniging, chanting...etc to get more certificates, ask K2 students to start learning musical instruments, they claim that their K3 students have the ability to read P3 level books...etc.  well, I'm sure about it, everything they do is to satisfy the parents' need and in fact, many parents do want to prepare their kids for the elite school.  It's just not my cup of tea.

My boy is studying in this school for the second year. I want him to study here because the teachers are nice and caring to the students. The principal is also good. I can always see her to help taking care of students whenever I go there. You can always talk with her and offer your opinion, and she will respond and accept in a nice manner. You can choose to join the extra curricular activities or competitions, and they are not compulsory.  The students are encouraged to read 2 books every week with parents and teachers to nourish their interest in reading from a young age. My boy enjoys the school very much. I think every school has its strength and weakness, no school is perfect. In the playgroup year, the staff will definitely help the student to washroom. Now my boy needs not the staff to help, but they will accompany them. During the summer vacation of K2 , the school will prepare interview class for them. I suppose this may equip the students to have interview for some primary schools.

I think 30 students in one class is quite big, sometimes the individual needs of the student may not be well taken care. And the arrangement of some activities is quite confusing. That' s what I regard as weaknesses. Actually, you can always phone and ask if you have any quiry.

elainec,

A friend of mine has her daughter studying pre-nursery at HK Preschool (kln Tong).  There're 32 students in a class with 3 teachers.  So, u can imagine how it's like.  With half of the class crying....the teachers can only deal with the crying ones and the rest has not much attention.  Besides, if your kid is independent and staying with 10 or more crying kids, how would he/she feel?  It must be quite bad and bored.  That's why my friend's daughter is refusing to go to school now.  She cries when she's getting close to the school.  My friend is surprised that her daughter was OK at the beginning of Dept and suddenly started crying also.

elainec,

How old is your kid?  Victoria Homantin has a smaller class of 15 (max.).  For K1, my elder daughter was graduated from St. Cat and I probably will send my younger one there too.  St. Cat has Putonghau/Eng class now (starting from 2007).  Since I don't like pushing my daughter too much and I don't mind if they can't get into elite primary school, I will not apply KV.  I'm quite happy with the way St. Cat teaching the kids.  Some parents might not think the level of Chinese and Maths is good enough at St. Cat but my elder daughter is managing well with her study at KTS, so I think St. Cat is OK.

I think your son is considered as a 'big' kid.  But how old is he now?  1 1/2 or younger?  For young kid, I personally think discipline and moral training is more important than the academic side.  I want my kid to hand over her empty plate to the teacher after she finished her tea time snack, say good morning to everyone, tidy up her toys/books after using them....YMCA (TST) is the best for that.  YMCA even teaches kids to pray.  Victoria is good too but no praying tme.  HK Preschool has very very little discipline training, it only concentrates on academic training.  U must really know what you'd ask from a kindie, then u can make the right decision.  U want a happy kid?  a kid with discipline, a kid know how to speak in both Eng/Man at the age of 2 1/2, or a mix or everything?  Bear in mind that no one school is the best for everything.  Some say that looking for a school for your kid is just like marrying someone, you choose the one who is the most suitable for YOURSELF, but not the BEST one.

that is a good question, yanamami! sorry, i m greedy so i would say a bit (as much as possible) of everything, for my son to be happy (must), with discipline, and also can speak both eng & ch (which he can do now but more english than chinese)....  so which school should i choose???

so your daughter is a "small kid"?!  yes, my son's 2.5 yrs old already!

I think my son also learn displine in HKPS. When I accompanied him in the class last year (first few days of school) He is asked to empty the plate after snack time. The teachers also taught him to say good morning and tidy up the toys afterwards. I think learning is a life long process and teaching a child discipline at home is also important. Yes, they don't have praying time, but they will learn some bible story or ethics on friday. The also have fellowship activity after school. I admit that 30 students is big class. They will therefore separate into 2 groups during the lessons. I believe all of the playgroup students will adapt into school life after 1-2 months. They cry probably they miss their parents and they don't know the school well.

I think HKPS is quite good.  Children learn a lot of things during playing.  Also, there are many opportunities for the children to perform, e.g sing a song on stage during assembly, or be a M.C at Christmas party/gradulation party.  There are also a no. of extra curricular activities to choose from (although some are good, some are so-so).

YankeeMa,

I hardly find this topic.  I've applied K1 for my son.  Could you give me some ideas about:
1) Is this school pushy in academic performance (as some parents said)?
2) My son is polite and quiet, and he would like to clean up by himself after snack time and playing.  He would take some times to observe before he tries something new. Is he suitable for this KG?
3) How would be the interview conducted?
