Some thoughts on DICKWU'S Sharing

Hi dickwu,
After reading your mail, I have a growing unease for your sharing. If I take your points seriously, it is impossible to wait and see A-school operating in such a manner. Actually I appreciate your effort in telling us another picture of A-school, I would be grateful if you can explain further on the implications of your point of view. Can you clarify the following points?
a) Do you mean there is a conspiracy or political consideration as A-school has chosen Ms Din and Dr Chan as the Vice-principal? Or it is your assumption that they are incompetent and lack of vision and mission in running a new school?
b) Have you worked with Ms Din and Dr Chan? It seems that from your point of view they are ineffective teachers, are your accusations drawn from evidences or again by your observations and interpretation (projecting points from small to get a big picture) ?
c) What is a good English curriculum? As I know it is a universal practice that extensive reading is the trend to help students to get maximum exposure to the second language. Teaching phonics is to prepare them to have self-assess learning. Self-learning skills is significant to our children's growth that they can learn without help from teachers. This is a type of ownership of learning. Show and tell is meaningful as it provides a valuable opportunity for the kids to apply what they have learnt. They can use their language purposefully to communicate with the others in an authentic way. So what's wrong with this program?
d) Do you think you are jumping too fast to the conclusion that a school has got a low-intake rate, which is the consequence of ineffective principalship? If it is not a very precise and fair judgment?
e) What culture do you desire in terms of school-teachers-parents relationship? We are parents and should take a strong role in shaping up the culture of our school. It is sad to know you’ve got very bitter experience in encountering the troublesome parents. But in my experience it is another picture, we (my school) seldom target s the so-called “problematic parents”. Nowadays the school should be more transparent and seek the help from the resources of the society. Parents are one of the influential and the most valuable resources. We should not undermine our roles. I also doubt if we parents have adopted a very negative way of thinking that just sit and wait and do not voice out our dissatisfactions through the appropriate channel, it is another type of self-censorship. At the early September, I have tried to write a letter to school formally as it is difficult to contact the schoolteachers and I think made it black and write is an effective way to record the action we have taken. Accountability is a tricky word; I think we should be more careful before we ask for this, as we are professional teachers!

Sorry for asking so many questions and I hope you all parents of BK won’ t be bored as I am happy to communicate with you all on the net!
