English Literature is composed of three genres:
1. Poetry (includint rhymes, ambience, format, language, etc.)
2. Drama (including setting, plot, characters, themes, motifs, etc.)
3. Novel (including background, biography, themes, techniques, etc.)
Each genre is also divided into two parts: old and modern. No matter which genre you're studying, you must know the historical background well.
Sometimes, Shakespearean sonnets and Shakespearean plays are two independent parts you need to study. It depends on what levels you are studying.
If you are studying at an advanced leve, you may need to relate English literature to other aspects like women, society, linguistics, films, etc.
I'd like to recommend a very useful reference book here.
