Dear all mums,

I would like to let my girl to continue studying Phonic right after graudation from St. Cat. But I'm very selfish & stupid that don't know what knid of phonic she's studying in St Cat ???? A kind of Jolly Phonics or somthings else ????

And what level should she attend, and any good centre refer ???? Pls help , many thanks !!!!!!

My girl also graduate from St. Cath. They teach basic phonics, sound of each alphabet and some blends. It is not letterland. Believe is not jolly phonics either (don't know what is jolly phonics).

You could consider Ready-to-learn (RTL). They have branches in North Point as well as in Yau Ma Tei. My girl started study there when she was in K.3. The school will interview your girl to understand her level of English and phonics before allocating her to an appropriate class.

RTL not only teach phonics and revise them in every lesson. They also focus on reading, listening and speaking; writing will be for elder kids. They have their own course materials which are developed by the school principal. All teachers are qualified native English teachers. Once you start, you could continue until the kid has grown up. i.e. move from one level to another and continues to improve his/her English.

The best thing about them is small group approach, each group has only four kids or less, so kids have a fairly good chance to speak in each lesson. Another point is they have many levels for kids with different English level; they ensure that kids of similar level to be in the same class.

The bad thing is it is rather expensive, HK$265 per hour, so HK$1,060 for 4 lessons per month.

Personally, I think it is worth the money as I believe in small group approach and would prefer my kid to have the chance to speak with native English teacher every week.

Really thanks for your input, I did visited RTL, but which I think is far away fm my house, but will re-consider it again base on yr comments.

Hope my girl can hv good English standard as yours

I am K1 mum. Learning from St. Cat CD, I think that St. Cat cover the basic already - letter sound, blends, digraphs, word families, etc.

When I compare with Jolly Phonics and Phonics Kingdom, only the long vowels (ee, oo, oe, ow...) are not fully covered. This can be covered in few lessons or taught by parents thro' CD. So, to me, may be I prefer to move on to reading, conversation... so that the children can put the phonics in use.

Please further advise.

Hi,

I think SC has already used a very good teaching method in teaching their students phonics. My child has learned it well and he can spell a word he doesn't know when I pronounce it in syllables. My son is also studying an English course in Jordan where they teach Letterland. It is also a small group class with max 4 students. The fee is $200 per hour.

I wish I know phonics, but I don't. All I know is what I learned from St. Cath.'s CD. But I believe they just teach the basic sounds plus some blends, digraphs, word families, etc., which do not cover all phonics sounds.

According to a learning centre called Happy Seed, (www.happyseeds.ca) which has advertised in BK, they classify phonics into basic plus 4 levels as shown below:

Basic: Phonics – A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z

Level 1: Phonics - at, an, ap, ad, ag, ig, id, it, in, ip, ox, ot, op, og, ob

Level 2: Phonics - ug, un, ub, up, ut, ed, et, en, eg, el, eck, ack, ick, uck, ock

Level 3: Phonics - ch, th, sh, wh, sm, sn, sp, sl, sc, sk, sw, st, fl, gl, cl, bl, pl

Level 4: Phonics - gr, fr, br, cr, pr, dr, qu, tr, ch, tch, sh, th, ng, mp, nd, nt, nk, st, sp, sk, ft, lk, lt, ing, er, ly, ed

I think phonics is important in the sense that at the end of the day, you want your kid to be able to not only know the sounds, but also able to use them to help reading, spelling and then writing. Then, your kid need to practice and practice and practice..., and the person who help him/her to practice should be, in my opinion, a professional phonics teacher.

When I help my girl to prepare for dictations, I also encourage her to use phonics to help spelling. However, what I learned from St. Cath's CD is clearly insufficient and limiting. So, I was not able to do a proper job in helping her to sound out the words.

For the case of my girl, even tough she has graduated from St. Cath., has studied in RTL for 1.5yrs., and has two phonics lessons per week from school (taught by native English teacher), she still doesn't know all the sounds and able to use them well in reading and spelling, not to mention writing. Of course, this also relates to the talent of the kid; my girl is only average.

I think selecting good phonics courses is important. My suggestions would be as follows:

1. Taught by NET (native English teacher)
2. Small class size that allows the kid to speak and practice phonics
3. Offer continous courses that allow kids move from one level to another. Learning phonics is definitely not a one off thing.

By reading the course description, looks like the Happy Seed phonics courses (mentioned above) are also worth to consider. Also, there are other BK topics in latter pages talk about good phonics courses that concerned parents might want to look at.
