Using Simplified Chinese from 2008

Starting 2008. 聯合國已經決定使用的中文字一律為簡體字。

Most international schools are using simplified Chinese.
Does your child's school also using too?

Please list down the schools which are using simplified:
1. ESF schools

Re: Using Simplified Chinese from 2008

Right, that's why we have to keep track on their learning progress.  Both kinds of characters are important to our kids, but when they face the GCSE exams, that will be a great concern.  Don't give up!

Re: Using Simplified Chinese from 2008

I share CheryMum's and leehoma001's preference for traditional Chinese, and I don't believe anyone who know traditional Chinese well should have any difficulty in picking up simplfied Chinese, if need be.  Call me a stubborn old-fashioned die-hard, simplied Chinese is to me lesser Chinese.

warren

Re: Using Simplified Chinese from 2008

Dear CherylMum,

So my worry is whether my daughter will have difficulties in taking GCSE or IB (probably in simplified characters) when she grows older -- will her understanding of the papers be reduced? or she won't be able to answer with all simplified characters?warrren and leehoma001, do you have such worry? Or I am thinking too much?

This is a real but probably not a serious concern.  At least our kids will have far more chances than we had to get exposed to simplied Chinese.  I guess I will stick my girl to traditional Chinese in her primary years, even if traditional Chinese is to become a lost art.

Regards,
warrrren

Re: Using Simplified Chinese from 2008

I think Hong KOng International and Hong Lok Yuen Int. School in Tai Po both teach traditional Chinese.
International Christian School teaches simplified.

Re: Using Simplified Chinese from 2008

Hi Leehoma001,

Do you know that the IB exam in Chinese can be answered in both simplied and traditional characters or even a mixed?

I may be wrong but understand that English and French are the only two IBO Language A languages at this moment.  There will very soon be four - with Chinese (Mainland simplified Chinese) and Japanese added to the list.  I heard that Spanish will be added to the list of language A later this year or next year.

Though I don't like simplified Chinese, I recognise that it is going to represent the mainstream.

Regards,
warrrren

Re: Using Simplified Chinese from 2008

Simplied Chinese is lesser Chinese - it is true.

From Traditional Chinese to simplied Chinese is much easier than vice versa. Look at the traditional Chinese written by the people in the Mainland.

The speed of reading simplied Chinese will improve quickly with practice. That's my experience.
