Violin Exam : How to memorize scale !! Pls Help !

My daughter will take violin Grade 5 exam in April/May. She find that it is very difficult for her to memorize the scales, dominant 7th, diminished 7th, arpeggio and chromatic scale. She is feeling very sad about that. Her teacher just said that practice more then you can memorize them.

Can any mom give me some hints or methods to memorize these scales ?

For dominant 7th, the chord should be counted as So, Ti, Re, Fa or as Do, Mi, So, Ta (7b)

Once the examiner ask for Dom7th on F, you may first count that in F major, the so = Bb, then start on the Bb, play Do, Mi, So, Ta

Or you just think of So, Ti, Re, Fa.. see which one will be faster

For diminished 7th, the chord should be counted as Do, Ma (3b), Sa (5b) and Ta (7b), but all things start on Do

Anyway, for grade 5 violin, that's only 3 Dom7th chords, and 3 Dim7th chords. So just work harder, it should be fine.

Do you mean difficult to memorize the notes or the hand positions? For the latter I can't help you but the former I have some ideas.

I'm sorry that I can't understand your method.

For Dom 7th on F, the start will be on F ( not Bb )

For Dim 7th, the scale will start on G , A or D. ( not all thing start on Do )

I'm sorry that I know nothing about the music. I just follow the scale book and found taht I cannot undertand your method.

I should be most grateful if you could further enlighten me in this respect.

Dear Ivymom,

Thanks for your correction, I get my presentation incorrectly. The Dom7th start on F, was named to be "Key of Bb", that means that's "dominant 7th of Bb".

The dominant in fact meaning the 5th notes of the scales, so the dominant chord should be So, Ti, Re. However, this time we are talking about the 7th chord, so that would be a normal dominant chord + its 7th note = Fa.

For example, the examiner ask you to play a Bb dominant 7th, you better first count its 5th notes = F, so start on F, you just start like a F major, play the Do, Mi, So of the F major, then plus a 7b of the scales. You will just hear the sounding as "Do, Mi , So, Ta" or as "So, Ti, Re, Fa".

Dimished 7th is another story. Diminished 7th chord = 1, 3b, 5b, and 7b
For grade 5, the dimished 7th chord was test on three main open strings G, D, A. Did your teachers tell you that all three dim7th were played in the same fingering? These should be the most easiest scales in grade 5!! so just remember one set of fingering of dim 7th, if the examiner ask you to start on G, then you start the set of fingering on the G-string. The sounding of this set will be Do, Ma (3b), Sa (5b) and Ta (7b). You may sing the first note as Do to check the pitch of the scale.

Thanks a lot for your advice. It's very useful for daughter to memorize the Diminished 7th .

Regarding the other arpeggios and scales for examination, is there any mothod to memorize ?

Sorry for asking so much as my daughter 's violin teacher has never talked about how to memorize the scales or methods. She just said that practise more then you can memorize.

One more thing about the examination. My daughter is P.4 ( i.e. 10 years old )and can communicate with my Philipino maid very well.

As such, I think she can manage the English during the examination and have not employer an intrepeter for her to save money. My daughter has learned violin for nearly five years, it is the first time she sits for the examination. I am now quite worry that whether she can manage or understand what the examiner's instruction.
Ususally, can a P.4 kid undertand the examiner's instruction ?

change a teacher if you can, a good teacher should be able to tell you what's going on with scales. (Although I am not a strings teacher, but at least my violin teacher tell me what/how should I play in the scales)

Besides, I just let my students to have exams without interpeter, not to save money but that will give good image to the examiner. Vocabularies are so less in the aural part, and the examiner usually being so nice to let you speak slowly.

Sorry for too tried tonight, type you about the other scales tmr.

Sorry ! I have no idea about it !

My violin teacher has never told about the aural test and 伴奏.

Regarding the examinaton date, my teacher said that there will be about three weeks in advance.

你個小朋友是否第一次考小提琴？考小提琴必需有伴奏，而 aural 果部份都是由伴奏果位老師上堂，我個仔的小提琴老師係唔會負責這一部份。我個小朋友又是四、五月考五級小提琴，上次考二級的時候好似上了兩個幾月，想睇下係咪真的需要上咁多堂，有冇媽咪可以分享下？

But "平時學琴會慢慢記得" is not my daughter's case. I try to ask her to 個心跟住唱do re me fa so la ti do . My violin teacher seems not so professional.

你囡囡的小提琴老師是私人，還是在琴行教？出左考試日期就要找伴奏及上 arual ，如果是琴行應該會提你，可能你個老師等出左時間先同你講啦。

Dear Ivymom,

well... I am not that great... just share what I have learnt in playing violin.

My teacher separate them in 4 groups - starting with different fingerings.

Play the most difficult G major & G minor first. 3 Octaves!! Take extra care on different position of the hands. Note for changing from position 1 - 3, then from 3 to 5!

for others, group them -- start with first finger / 2nd finger / 3rd finger.
you may argue, well, the book allow you to play the scales with different position(把位), but what my teacher said is -- STICK to the first position! He said, if you play in 2nd position, you are taking your own risk. and in fact, while you do your sight reading, you won't think of playing the 2nd position, so you must play the first position ALL IN PITCH!

Chromatic scales is another things -- group in another fingering. You should soon find out if you remember the starting on G one, you may able to play others. They are same fingering, just skipping some notes!

Then comes to the last group of Arpeggios! Remember the fingering groups from Major Scales!! If you did your major scales good enough, this part should become more easier. They should be either 1,3 or 0,2,4 group, just some of them are more difficult, always think before you put your fingers!
