Piano -- Is it a kind of musical instrument?

hi all,

When applying for primary schools, some primary schools do not count piano as a kind of musical instrument. Why?

Which school has this restrication? Please advise. Thanks.

It seems  Charlotte_mon is quite right as I also heard (may be it is just a rumour only) that there is no longer any privilege for applicants to renowned primary schools to know playing piano, because they regard it as a must and expect all the applicants should have known it (too common now).

If the aforesaid is a fact, then in this sense piano is not a musical instrument and knowing to play it won't add value to your kid (unless he/she is so brilliant and gets award in open competition) when he/she is applying for a place in those renowned and popular primary schools.

So, in order to enhance the chance of successful application to those schools, calculated parents nowadays will let their kids to learn playing the extraordinary or unusal musical instruments (such as the percussion or Chinese musical instruments, etc.) IN ADDITION to piano.

Re: Piano -- Is it a kind of musical instrument?

First, I agree that it is not too useful for the purpose of applying to good schools if you are just an ordinary player in any instruments, piano or not.

Second, the school requirement of learning an instrument other than piano is mainly out of practical consideration. How many pianos can a school have for the student sessions? My daughters' school has  6 or 7 pianos but this is still hardly enough if students are allowed to learn playing pianos at school.

Students are allowed to select 牧童笛 in most schools, so snobbishness is not the reason for the schools' requirement.

Re: Piano -- Is it a kind of musical instrument?

From the practical consideration, a calculated principal will not choose any elite piano player whether the students have Grade 8 piano or not.

Piano simply is useless instrument cos. it can't contribute to school orchestra. Any player other than piano in the orchestra can garner glories to the school reputation.

However, it is a pity that piano player can come out in the stage only for playing piano concerto in the orchestra.

In Hong Kong, instruments like violin are also common and popular but it is welcome by the schools. So it is not strange most schools would not count piano not because most students can play piano.

Some rare instruments like bassoon are most welcome by schools even for ordinary player cos no supply at all.
